View Full Version : Marijuana and ADD?

I hear conflicting reports about marijuanas effect on ADD, I ask this because I have been working on a website forever and a day and was kind of stuck on a css issue.
One night about two weeks ago I has just finished a blunt and decided to take a stab at the page.

Lo and behold when I woke up the next morning the page was all but complete, and I had come to an understanding of what I had been doing wrong. I won't go so far as to make marijuana responsible for the epiphany but the page was all but complete which must have required some amount of sustained concentration. All I can remember while doing the work was giggling at the fact that I was so high and actually working.

It's not really good before school but after school it wasn't so bad. Not that we have a choice but I made mine.

Pot makes me lazy and unmotivated personally. I am indifferent to marijuana though, I personally don't see it having any merit as an ADHD treatment, but I have personally used it as a mood stabilizer before and it worked so I am in no way knocking anyone's choice. The problem with marijuana is it's legal status, in my mind.

I don't see the need for pot. Most forms of taking it cause lung damage/cancer, it's kown to trigger schizophrenia in a percentage of the population, and the 'high' isn't that great.

Personally I'd prefer to do something like LSD or mushrooms, which are scientifically proven to be much safer (in fact, the only dangers are accidental self-harm due to hallucination - hence get a sitter, or picking the wrong mushrooms and dying from poison; these drugs aren't neurotoxic like alcohol).

I had come to an understanding . . .

. . . epiphany . . .

. . . sustained concentration. . .

. . . giggling . . .

I'm sorry, I don't understand what these things have to do with ADD. These all sounds like pretty typical symptoms of smoking pot.

What was it you thought was strange? I'm not trying to challenge you or anything; I just want to understand how this ties to ADD.

In that thread I hypothise why a percent of ADHDer Marijuana users seem to have atypical responce to pot.

Before I was dx'd with Ritalin, I used to smoke pot almost daily. Part of it was because of the crowd I was in (most of them smoked daily), and the other part of it was self medicating.

As my doctor pointed out, smoking lots of pot is a form of self-medication. Like medicine, heavy exercise, or lots of sex, marijuana's chemical component is similar in that it releases dopeamine and norepinephrine - two chemical that ADD brains tend to lack and help in focus and pleasure, lowering distractability and frustration.

Hope that helps!

The first time I was high on marijuana I felt like everything was flowing perfectly haha. This is really wierd, I actually did stuff ( like pick something up or sit up) and not know why I was doing it at the time but It made sense after. For example, I thought in my head I was thirsty, 2 minutes later I picked up a cup and got up not even knowing why I was doing it but then I thought Oh thats right I want a drink haha. It was like I was running on pure intuition. But my ADD was out of control, I couldnt concentrate on something like a video game even If I tried my very hardest. But I could actually sit still without feeling the need to fidget or think about itches and little things that gave me the need to move.

That was really cool but then I started to smoke regularly, which had an adverse effect. I started to feel like I didnt want to do anything ever. All I wanted to do was eat, sleep, and do stuff that gave me instint gratification like TV. The only thing that made me want to get up was to get more marajuana. That was such a waste of my life. Since then I havent smoked in 2 months and feel alot more alive.

But overall I think marajuana can effect ADD greatly both ways. It just depends on the person.

Speaking of video games, I was extremely cognizant of it's effects and so I found myself testing things like reaction times using video games.

I loaded up GT4 and played Nurbugring with the faste car I had and found my lap times to be about the same.
As pointed out the effects of Marijuana can be depedant on whether it's sativa or indica, I did not bother to determine what was what.

It's interesting because it gave me the ability to slow down, something I truly had not realised was the issue came to light almost immediately with marijuana.
It was almost as if I could stop the ride and get off at junctures that I needed to, but much like others have reported it seems to have robbed me of any motivation.
It's an interesting dichotomy. Suddenly having the ability to do things but no longer caring if they get done.

I'm wondering if it's down to a matter of dosage, being stoned SUCKS! but when I'm just barely high or on my way down I am more productive than ever and more open mentally. As you can probably guess this is an ongoing experiment with me.
Since the government has for all intents and purposes ruled out any real high level of research and since the effects seem to be largely subjective, I shall have to experiment on myself.

Makes ADHD worse. Cannot function properly baked... people can't tell I'm stoned, but they know for sure I have ADHD, it's great that the only way people could tell if I was stoned is only more ADHD symptoms. So they never really guess. Weed doesn't make me all giggly like other people. Just more in my own world, which is great, it makes life an artful adventure and worth living. [If you don't mind being a reactionary observer of your own life..it can be nice or not]

Only [perhaps!] useful at moderate doses alongside some sort of stimulant to help focus, energy drink and a cigarette say, or with tobacco/cannabis combination. Or even during one of your ADHD med doses, you'll be able to concentrate easier.

It worked ok for slowing down the rapid thoughts I used to have before I was diagnosed and treated with dex. The only problem is it tends to increase some symptoms of ADD like lazyness, bad concentration etc.

Ever since I've been on Dex. I haven't felt like I wanted to use it.
