i've got my staple musical artists that are literally my "bible" when it comes to dealing with issues and trying to find something to relate to ...

i actually started listening to music for the first time when i was 14, because of my parents being strict mormon and their "anti-society/pro-church" influence. they wouldn't let me listen to anything that they felt was a "bad influence" ... but by 14, not only was i beginning to really have a hard time dealing with life, but i was desperately seeking *anything* that i could relate to in an effort to understand what was going on.

i wasn't allowed much social interaction with the "real world", so i was completely clueless at that age, not having *anything* i could compare my life to. i had "heard" about ADD at the time (i don't think there was an ADHD yet), but i really didn't know what it was nor did i have any concept of "normalcy" to know that i might have a disorder as such. anyways, since then, i've developed a core group of artists (very much against my parents' wishes) that really sort me out when i'm feeling down, and that get me euphoric when i'm feeling good.

fyi, my mom attributes my "depression" to the music i listen to ... ha ha ha. little does she know ...

but ya, in no particular order, the music that has helped me the most through life has been by: nirvana, garbage, sheryl crow, morcheeba, tegan & sara, rilo kiley, modest mouse, jewel, natalie imbruglia, radiohead, collective soul, nelly furtado, death cab for cutie/postal service, and joydrop.

i'm sure there's other artists that i just can't think of right now, but for the most part, that group right there has kept me from losin' it completely :) ... ya kno?

so, what music has helped ya'll out the most?

I hope I don’t mess up your thread. I mostly listen to meditation type music and Buddhist type chants. But I really like the lyrics of these two songs and often read them for strength.

This is for the man who helped me the most -

Because You Loved Me

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through, through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me strength 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

And this one -

Bring On The Rain

Another day has almost come and gone
Can't imagine what else could go wrong
Sometimes I'd like to hide away somewhere and lock the door
A single battle lost but not the war ('cause)

Tomorrow's another day
And I'm thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

It's almost like the hard times circle 'round
A couple drops and they all start coming down
Yeah, I might feel defeated,
And I might hang my head
I might be barely breathing - but I'm not dead, no

'Cause tomorrow's another day
And I'm thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

No, I'm not gonna let it get me down
I'm not gonna cry
And I'm not gonna lose any sleep tonight
'Cause tomorrow's another day
And I am not afraid
So bring on the rain

Tomorrow's another day
And I'm thirsty anyway
So bring on the rain

bring on, bring on the rain
no, I'm not gonna let it get me down
I'm not goin' cry, no
bring on the rain

bring on, bring on the rain
bring on the rain
bring on the rain
bring on the rain

oh you made my thread better :), not mess it up.

"because you loved me" is great.

ha ha, i've listened to sneaker pimps, which is like techno inspired by buddhist chants. but never really heard anything legitimate. how did you get into meditation music?

here's one of my favorite songs right now. it's by sheryl crow, called detours.

Mother, can you hold me together
It's so dark and I'm losing my way
I took all of these detours to find love
But when I did, it just faded away

Now what do I do
With this sweet love of mine
Do I give it away and
Hope someday I'll find
Someone half as awake
As the moon and the stars
Mother, teach me to love
With a paper-thin heart

Mother, your words are so healing
You speak of love and of light and of peace
But I've made it my course to avoid you
Just to hide from these feelings of grief

Now what do I do
With this sweet love of mine
Do I give it away and
Hope someday I'll find
Someone half as awake
As the moon and the stars
Mother, teach me to love
With a paper-thin heart

Now what do I do
With this sweet love of mine
Do I give it away and
Hope someday I'll find
Someone half as awake
As the moon and the stars
Mother, teach me to love
With a paper-thin heart

Mother, I know you are with me
You were there when I took my first breath
I can't stop looking back for the answers
I just keep coming up with regret
There are some things I just can't forget

[INDENT]I hope I don’t mess up your thread. I mostly listen to meditation type music and Buddhist type chants.

I think this is exactly the sort of thing paravis is talking about.:)

I use my music to externalize my emotions, so peaceful music for peaceful times, electronic house trance for working on the computer, Motorhead and Rusted root for rush hour insane driving, and punk/alternative (love postal service) for boppin' around town running errands.

Good thread.

I enjoy meditation, it keeps me sane.

This is one of my favourites -

That is nice bluerose.

It is hard for me to pick favorites because I enjoy just about any music myself, except I am usually too impatient for slower music. I do like classical and some other slower music. Actually I have found that Pachelbel's Canon calms me down and has become one of my favorite songs. Usually though I prefer more upbeat music.
I also use different music for different activites to keep me on track and focused. Since I can't be on medication right now I have found this to be extremely helpful.
