View Full Version : Am I ever going to grow?

I've been asking myself this for about 7 years now am I'm still waiting for my growth spurt... I'm a guy and I stand at only 5'8. I've been on Adderall for 7 or 8 years now and I'm really thinking that it's stunted my growth. I was 5'6 when I went on it back in 8th grade and I've grown 2 inches since then. Up until I was out of high school I only took the Adderall on school days so I used to get the drug holidays but not anymore. I've taken between 90 and 120mg a day since I was 18 so I do take a rather high dosage (although I'm down to taking 90-100mg/d now.) Here's the heights of my family members:

My Mother's side:

My Mom: 5'10
Aunt 1: 6'0
Aunt 2: 6'1
Uncle: 6'3
Grandfather: 6'4
Grandmother: 5'8
Female Cousin: 6'1
Male Cousin: 6'2
Male Cousin 2: 6'0

My Brother (16 years old): 6'1

My Father's side:

My Dad: 6'0
Uncle 1: 6'0
Uncle 2: 5'11
All 3 aunts: 5'6
Grandfather: unknown
Grandmother: she was 5'4 but is no more than 4'10 now..
All my cousins are taller than me except the female ones...

I was in a car accident when I was 17 (no, I wasn't driving) and I broke my wrist (and lasserated my spleen, grade 3 concussion, 42 stitches in my forehead.) They said they took x-rays of everything and told me that my growth plates were still wide open so I should have more growing to do... Well I was 5'8 then and 4 years later im still 5'8... The rest of my body says I should be taller, my wingspan measures 75 inches (6'3) I wear a size 12.5 shoe but for some reason I'm only 5'8 and I really think it has to do with the Adderall. I do eat plenty of food, a lot more than most people do that don't take the medication so I don't think nutrition is an issue. I've always been extremely athletic too. My Mom did tell me though that my grandfather entered college at 18 and 5'9. He graduated at 22 and was 6'4 but I'm 21 now so I'm really losing hope on that... I started puberty at or before most of my peers, I've had facial hair for a few years now but at the sametime my Wisdom teeth just recently came through my gums (always have been late on getting my teeth) and two of them haven't completely came through yet.

Has anyone tried something like HGH to grow? Should I be worried? I can't say that I'm ashamed to be this height, but if I'm really supposed to be taller then I'd really like to be.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate the input! :)

That is a great question. Talk with your doc, and have those growth plates checked again, before supplementing with something that may be unsafe in other ways. You are quickly reaching the age where male growth is complete, as you said, if not already there.:)

... I started puberty at or before most of my peersHave you told your doctor this? Ask to see a specialist if he isn't able to give you the information you need.

I haven't spoke with my new doc about it. I was also diagnosed with Scoliosis(sp?) in my back when I was around 10 years old. I went every year for a few years to a specialist to make sure it didn't get any worse but I havent been since I was maybe 14 or 15. I know I've heard that the curveture of your back can really affect your height. I've always had to sit on a chair with good back support and eventually gave up hockey mostly because of the lower back pain skating + sitting in horrible school chairs gave me. My back hasn't gave me any issues since I got out of high school and gave up hockey, but at the sametime I sit in a chair with great back support all day...

Dude for real I've been wondering if Adderall didn't mess up my growth too. I come from a family of giants (minus my mother who is 5'5'') but I stand at a whopping 5' 8'' and I'm 21. I've pretty much reached the end of my growth bridge and I am only wondering if Adderall's to blame but what can you do.

Long-Term Suppression of Growth: Careful follow-up of weight and height in children
ages 7 to 10 years who were randomized to either methylphenidate or non-medication treatment
groups over 14 months, as well as in naturalistic subgroups of newly methylphenidate-treated
and non-medication treated children over 36 months (to the ages of 10 to 13 years), suggests that
consistently medicated children (i.e., treatment for 7 days per week throughout the year) have a
temporary slowing in growth rate (on average, a total of about 2 cm less growth in height and 2.7
kg less growth in weight over 3 years), without evidence of growth rebound during this period of
development. Published data are inadequate to determine whether chronic use of amphetamines
may cause a similar suppression of growth, however, it is anticipated that they likely have this
effect as well. Therefore, growth should be monitored during treatment with stimulants, and
patients who are not growing or gaining height or weight as expected may need to have their
treatment interrupted.

This is what it said at the FDA site on Adderall about height and medication.

I would say, ask your relatives when they reached their final height. I have some friends that grew a few inches in their 20s. Everyone is different, I doubt adderall had anything to do with your overall height. Besides, 5'8 isn't a bad height, I think its above average actually. I think average is 5'7.

Stimulant growth retardation seems to be mostly placed at 1 foot retardation maximum, and seems to be associated with the appetite supressant effect rather than any neural changes to growth hormone regulation and such.

That is: eat more. Your body needs fuel in order to get bigger. Make sure you've got plenty of protein, too (milk, eggs, bread, beans, lentils, potatoes, or meat if you eat that). Your body can't build without protein. Not to mention stimulants possible speed up metabolism, worsening the lack of nutrients.

I consider myself a runt because at 14 my little brother grew a full beard and was 6' tall and I am 5'9" tall at 27 and I can't grow facial hair at all and I have been taking stimulants forever so I think there's some fact there.

I remember reading recently (I'm sorry I don't remember the source at the moment) that there is some evidence that children with ADHD mature more slowly even when not taking medication -- that is obviously true mentally -- there is a good long term study of kids age 6 - 16 that was just completed and they found that their brains went through the growing and pruning stages just like non ADD kids but three years later. There is also some information that this may also be true of physical growth and that ADD kids "naturally" grow a bit later. My best non expert guess is that it is a bit of a combination of both.

I believe in the United States the height of the average male is 5' 9" -- that makes me average at something! Oooops -- wait, no, I'm a girl. So much for being average.
