Hello Everyone,
I was just recently prescribed with 5mg Adderall.

I took it for the first time, and i didn't feel anything. In the past, A friend gave me a 20mg pill i think, and i felt the effects instantly. Does anyone know with such a low dose if takes a few days or weeks to feel the focusing effects?

The doctor wanted me to start on 5mg's to see the how my body reacted to it. Has anyone else started out on such a low dose that has information to give.?

It would be greatly appreciated :)
Thanks.

Are you seeing a pdoc or a GP/FP? The only reason I ask is that the former are better equipped in their training and clinical practice to effectively prescribe stimulants. They also tend to understand better the process of titrating up dosages to find the right one.

To answer your question, yes, I started on a low dose as well and didn't notice any improvement. My pdoc worked with me to titrate up the dosage to a consistent level. I take XR (7AM) + IR (4PM) now. With the XR, the onset is very subtle over a 2 hour period. With the Latter, I tend not to notice it's onset if I have remembered to take my XR dose in the AM. If I forgot to take my XR dose and just take the IR dose, however, it takes about 15 minutes before I notice an effect.

I'd recommend you talk to your doctor and mention that you haven't noticed any changes. Most pdocs will work with you to find your correct dose.

With stimulent medication you usually know whether it's working within an hour or so. Most people need more than 5 mg (though that is exactly the dose that works for me).

i started at 10mg XR, and felt it within an hour ( or less ).

If the doctor said to call in a few days to see how it's working make sure u do that. Like the earlier post stated, within about an hour you should know if it's working or not. Your doctor will probably have u go up to 10mg for a few days and see if you notice anything. It takes time but once u find the right dose/medication it is worth it. Good luck.

.

What is a GP/FP?

My doctor said "We'll check in 4-6 Weeks to see how your doing" I wonder if i can call in a few weeks or so, and let the doc know that the prescription isn't effectivly working. Hopefully I can. I guess the Regular Adderrol (non-XR) isn't that effective, especially in small doses. Anyone know over time if 5mg will improve over time?

Actually, instead of improving it usually works less because your body gets used to it, (builds up a tolerance) and then you gotta increase the dosage.
So when you first start taking any stimulant, it is usually the strongest since your body has little tolerance, then as the tolerance builds the dosage has to do so accordingly. Therefore if it doesn't work now, then it'll work even less later. The only thing that will improve with time is your body's ability to cope with the side effects, so yeah, definitly increase the dosage.

Hello!
I started on 5 mg Adderall IR once per day. My doctor wanted to go very slowly. After about a week of taking the 5 mg in the morning, I started taking another 5 mg IR around noon. Then 10 mg IR twice a day after about a month.

I think some doctors take a very cautious route with prescribing stimulants. I appreciate my doctor for having that approach. It allowed me find the lowest effective dose. And if my body was going to react badly to the Adderall in the beginning, then I would have preferred that to happen on the lowest dose.

My doctor is also great about listening to me. Everytime we decided to make a change, it was because I called before my next appointment was due to tell her it was losing its effectiveness.

Be honest about the drug's effects (or lack of effects) and hopefully you and you're doctor can figure out a course of action that will help you.

GP/FP means general practitioner/family practice --- this versus a psych doc....

Mine started me at 10mg XR.. I have now moved up to 20mg IR two times a day, and that works perfect for me. It actually lasts about 6 hours per pill. (for me)

i started at 5mg IR 3x a day sorta felt a defog but it only lasted maybe 3hrs. i only had to take it for a few days (long story) before my next appt though and we upped it to 10mg which is a heckuva lot better for me

i vote just call your doc whether or not he's expecting you to call. there's not really a point in taking it if it isn't doing anything
