View Full Version : Too much Adderall or too little?
chattygirl 03-05-08, 12:17 PM I am on day 5 of Adderall XR. The doctor started me on 20 mgs. Day 1- nothing. Day 2 & 3- I just felt, for lack of a better word, happy. It was like I was going to have something fantastic happen later that day. According to most everyone I encountered, I was talking "90 miles an hour". I did feel I was moving at a faster rate on day 2 and slowing down a bit on day 3.
Day 4 & 5- I am more like the old me. I am calm...almost too calm. I am extremely sleepy today. I really only have only had one night (day 2) that I couldn't sleep. I am experiencing the lack of hunger and a terribly dry mouth. I know those things are to be expected.
Yesterday, I came into work extremely frustrated ( an hour and a half after XR). My roommate made me angry earlier that morning. The ladies I work with (one has a 23 yr. old with ADD) said that I needed to call the doctor. They said I was mad/ pretty upset over something that wasn't that big of a deal and that I had been so happy the day before. Does that sound like my mgs are wrong? Too much? Too little?
How do I know if it's just my body getting used to things? Or if I need less or more? I have a big Certification test coming up at the end of this month. I want me to be "okay" for that.
I don't even really know anyone with Adult ADD, so I really don't know how things are supposed to be going. I would appreciate any help. Thanks! Have a blessed day:D

Your roommate didn't "make you angry". You made yourself angry about what your roommate did/didn't do.
<takes off CBT hat>
I say this b/c language is a powerful thing...
QueensU_girl 03-05-08, 12:26 PM re: meds
It sounds like your meds are making you a little "too speedy". (Talking 90 miles/hr.)
This is going to cause social or work problems as people will think you are 'on something' or hypomanic, etc. Whoa.
Being overly frustrated or irritable or low mood or excessive sleepiness can be a problem on strong stimulants like Adderall, too. (Esp. at 'Wear off'.)
These are some of the reasons I got off Adderall. Too intense.
Changed to the much milder Dexedrine. (Most docs are scared of this drug based on rumour and myth about drug abuse.)
It is more like a clean version of caffeine and invigorating job for the mind, I found.
Talk to your doctor.
Glad you had friends to tell you!

Lenny Leonard 03-05-08, 12:43 PM I would also give yourself some time to adjust to the medication. The first couple of weeks for me felt a little speedy, but then my body seemed to adjust to it after a while. Also, the new sense of clarity can be very exciting in my opinion. However, it never hurts to start smaller and ramp it up over time. A friend of mine just started on 10mg SR 1/day. Maybe thats the dose that would suit you to start. Definitely express any concerns to your doctor and do your own research. I can't expect my GP to know everything about the millions of drugs that are out there.

Same here... In my experience, Adderall is a bit "speedier" (for lack of a better word) than Dex. Though, it doesn't really affect me quite like it does QueensU_girl. I'm one of those rare weirdos that switches back and forth between Addy and Dex without any problems. Oh, except for the BARR generic Addy, but that's a whole other story!
Keep in mind that everyone is different! Just talk to your doctor and explain how you feel. I'm sure he/she will ask you more in depth questions and find out the best course of action for you! :D
Attainathon 03-05-08, 07:26 PM 20mg to start off seems a little high to me, but then again I only know what my experience was..
I started off on 10mg and gradually worked up to 30 mg XR a day.. Not sure if there is much difference, but maybe its too high of an initial dose?
ozchris 03-05-08, 07:32 PM Start on a lower dose. Increase it very slowly.
You might just have a negative reaction to this type of med. Remember that not all medications work for everyone..sometimes you have to try a few different ones.
LittlePrincess 03-05-08, 08:35 PM Give the med a chance. Though, just remember to document and report back to your doctor all of your side effects and feelings while on the med. Perhaps Adderall isn't the best choice for you. Or perhaps you simply need a change in dosage. However, I wouldn't recommend changing your dosage (higher OR lower) without talking with your doctor about it first.
Good luck and let us know how it goes! :)

Hey Buddy...Whats the Barr story...I take generic addy and am still trying to get it right!
TygerSan 03-06-08, 04:21 PM Hey Buddy...Whats the Barr story...I take generic addy and am still trying to get it right! If you do a forum search for Barr, you'll find some very unhappy customers. The different generic brands have different "filler" (inactive) ingredients. Some people can tell the difference between the brands (in terms of smoothness of onset/offset of drug, side effect profile), and many people appear to have the most trouble with the Barr brand generics. I actually preferred them to the Eon labs pills I got, but they did seem a bit stronger.
I've always gotten the same generic brand if I stuck with one pharmacy, but CVS carried the Barr and the other pharmacy I went to carried the Eon labs brand. I don't know if you can request a certain brand of generic; I'd guess that each pharmacy has some sort of "deal" with an individual manufacturer, so it might be difficult to request a specific brand of generic adderall.

Hey bud. Well obviously everyone is different (gotta put in a DISCLAIMER there;)). Anyway, in my experience BARR just feels a bit weaker than the Ranbaxy generic or Shire's Adderall. My latest prescription for Adderall was 15mg twice daily. I found out (too late) that Ranbaxy does NOT make the 15mg tabs, they only make 5, 10, 20, 30. (Yeah, It's weird and I don't know why.) So, I had to get the 15mg BARR tabs and they seem actually *weaker* than the 10mg Ranbaxy tabs that I've had in the past. The side effects are about the same. Maybe a tiny bit increased heart rate on the barr tabs, but nothing out of control.
Though I'll also add that I'm one of those rare weirdos that switches back and forth between Addy and Dex. I never had any problems and they both worked out well for me. Even the Barr Dex worked out well for me. I just, for some reason, do not prefer these Barr Addy tabs.
