Can anyone explain how adderall might cause someone to get a bladder infection? Friday I started to feel a bladder infection coming on (and just happened to have started taking IR two weeks ago and XR on Wednesday). As I was reading through some of the side effect listings of adderall on WebMD, I see bladder infection can be a side effect - how can one have anything to do with the other?
Is this something that will continue to reoccur or is it possibly a one-time thing? Any ideas on how to avoid this side effect in the future? I'm currently taking cranberry extract and drinking lots of water which has kept it from getting worse, but I will probably still head into the doctor to get checked out.
BTW - I feel like I've posted a ton of questions about adderall in the last week or so, but everyone here seems to have a lot of knowledge about ADD and adderall and I have to admit I'm a bit nervous about taking this medication (even though it's helping me tremendously). Thanks for your help and support.

I can't believe noone responded to this, I was in the e/r with a bladder infection shortly after starting Adderall as well..... Didn't think they were related!

I had similar problems on Adderall... I think it's the 'salt' in amphetamine salts that causes the problem. I took Hydrangea (herbal supplement) and it worked great. Unfortunately the problem was so persistent it was one of the reasons I stopped taking Adderall.

i have never heard of adderall causing bladder infections, but oh my, what a bad side effect.
If the adderall is working for you otherwise and you want to stay on it, it might be a good idea to re-evaluate your fluid intake.
more water, less soda for instance. make your body less susceptible. Also make sure you ask your doctor a for a Rx (with refills) of that handy dandy med that turns your pee orange (but alleviates the pain associated with bladder infection).
*also this might be one of those side effects that will eventually wear off. If its working well for you, give it time.

Pyridium (sp?)... I always have that around; it's a life saver for the discomfort/pain of UTIs. I usually don't finish the prescription because once the antibiotics kick in I don't need it. The pyridium rx is very affordable (under $10, if I remember correctly), and there's a generic that's even less. There's also an over-the counter med called AZO; this doesn't work as well for me, but it takes some of the edge off until I can get to the doc.
I'm not a doctor, tho I have a long history of this ailment (unfortunately). Interestingly, I haven't had one since starting on adderall...:) Adderall makes me thirsty, so I'm drinking a ton of water...dehydration definitely causes bladder infections.
Cranberry pills are a great preventative measure, but they won't get rid of an infection...once only a few "bad" bacteria take hold, they multiple exponentially and can spread to your kidneys if not treated with antibiotics. And this presents another lovely challenge...the "candida" infection...acidophilus supplements and yogurt everyday on the antibiotics, and if not, Diflucan/Fluconazole (gen) very cheap and way better than OTC.
