View Full Version : 15mg Dexedrine Spansules Questions
Hey again everyone,
I'm curious if going through the extra hoopla to get the Dexedrine name brand spansules is worth it, or should I stick to Barr? Is it even POSSIBLE to get name brand Dexedrine spansules anymore?
Thanks!
The brand Dexedrine spansules are all there is here in Ontario. They worked really great when I tried them, so I would recommend getting them if possible. I prefer the IR though, since you can time them so that there is no valleys in coverage.
You'd probably need more if you get spansules for a satisfactory result, at least I would.
Okay I just hope theres a difference between Dexedrine and Barr Generics because the price difference between the two is a whopping $100
Can anyone explain why theres a difference between the generics and name brands? My dad is under the impression that they're both exactly the same, which to be honest i am too. Why is there such a (supposedly) huge difference in THIS medication versus other prescription meds?
Does anyone know?
Technically, the drug formula's between generic and name brand will be in the same range the differences will be in the binding, mixing agents and the capsule itself. If you do some searching on these forums you should be able to find more details.
:)
Although it may seem ridiculous there are people who notice the different effects between different brands, if possible see if you can get a smaller prescription from your doc and try both.
addcents64 04-15-08, 08:25 PM I have not tried brand name Dexedrine 15mg spansules. I have tried both Barr and Mallinckrodt 15mg spansules. And the Mallinckrodt are far superior. Generics are allowed to have +20-20 of the active ingredient. That explains why some generics can actually be stronger than brand name. While other are less effective. There are even instances where 2x5mg can be stronger than 1x10mg. Even if they are by same manufacturer. When you find what brand works for you. Stick with it.

It's kinda like how you pay $5 for a really good burger when you can prob. spend $2 to make the exact same thing...kind of. not really i guess :P
Yes. Generally the medicine is exactly the same although quite a few people believe there's differences between manufacturers.
It's got heaps to do with marketing. What doctors, people see on TV or hear about wherever is generally what is prescribed or asked for.
Nike shoes cost $100
Exact same shoe without the Nike sticker $10
I'm not an expert on this stuff and someone will be able to explain it better hopefully.
Basically - Go for the cheaper ones first I'd say. If they don't do then try the name brand i guess.
There's no difference between generics and name brands.

I will have to disagree with you completely. I have taken Dextrostat (brand name by Shire) for 7-8 years. They recently stopped manufacturing and so I had to fill my last prescription with Barr generic dextroamphetamine. My Dextrostat was effective, smooth, clean, and I had a very clear though process, was able to focus.
I took Barr once years ago when pharmacy accidently gave them to me. They made me feel sick. I took them with an open mind- no preconcieved notions, etc.... I ran to pharmacy the next day and paid cash for the brand name.
Since I have taken Barr again, all I feel is foggy headed, unmotivated- like someone is TRYING to sedate me but it's just not working.
I feel 100% worse than if I took nothing- the only reason I've taken them for more than one day is because I am hoping this is some strange side affect that will clear itself up. I can't function properly and don't seem to care about anything. I did not feel medicated on Dextrostat and I feel very medicated now- like someone is trying to make me a zombie. I am an open minded person and would have no problem taking generic if it didn't skrew with me this terribly. Not to mention it was only $6 less (I dn't have insurance) which isn't exactly a price break for something that doesn't work. So If YOU have had experience with both generic and brand name, and they have worked just fine for you- congratulations. And if YOU HAVE NOT had experience with both, then I suggest not saying they are the same. Not to mention- they will affect different people differently. If they were the EXACT same thing, then they wouldn't be made by two different companies- they wouldn't look different, etc....
tjohn11 03-15-11, 03:23 PM Does anyone know if Dexedrine Spansules are still available in either generic or brand name? My pharmacy suddenly claims they can no longer get them and they may be in the process of being discontinued.
maxygolf 03-23-11, 01:25 AM I have tried the generic 15 mg dex spansules twice and both times got migraines within days. Then I read others complaining particularly about Barr and others mentioned headaches from generics.
Even though Dexedrine was bought by CorePharma that makes generics they will still be produced Catalent Pharma Solutions, the same facility GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) used with no changes in formulation, according to another blogger on this forum. They will be distributed by Amedra, a pharmaceutical company.
see post 12 under "Glaxo has sold Dex ER to CorePharma"
The only change will be the name on the pill will no longer be of GSK.
interesting how the same topics & concerns persist for years.
A few limited facts on availability and pricing. Please comment, correct, & contribute useful information

Most posting discuss generic makers as if they have free choice with few comments about health insurance and pharmacy controls. Large chain pharmacy and insurance companies purchase from preferred distributors based on pricing. They follow Federal and State controlled substances laws which do not control or require them to fill current consumer prescriptions. They are not legally or professionally required to use alternative sources to fill Class 2 prescriptions before they expire. Healthcare regulations allow supply and demand business model to prevail over consumer clinical consequences, public healthcare ethics, standards, and secondary costs.
<O:p</O:p
Physicians prescribe treatment based on individual responses using prescriptions and alternative treatment within guideline limitations set by insurance companies and availability. Dexedrine is preferred medication for many people giving the best clinical response with least side effects. :) He has no choice except to prescribe an alternative classifications if its not available. :(

2 large generic dexedrine makers merged. TEVA bought Barr. Production & wholesale distribution availability of various dosages of extended release Spansules and short acting tablets have been below established market demand “dexedrine classification” for a few years explaining why pharmacies can’t fill prescriptions. With twice production capacity and market supplier monopoly, they’re claiming "production problems". At same time companies are running large advertising campaigns for "generic Adderall".
Nicktendoe 04-18-11, 08:41 PM Im currently taking Barr dex 5mg IR 3x a day after a week they stopped working and now i feel nothing so my doctors going to put me on 15mg spansules and 5mg IR booster when needed so hopefully that will work better=)Im also gonna ask him to prescribe me memantine since i hear its supposed to eliminate tolerance which sound like the perfect combo!
Killface1981 04-19-11, 06:44 AM While I believe Barr/Teva are quite evil, I was on 60 mg of Dexedrine Spansules a day made by Barr for over a year... and they've been the best overall. They did take a a few days for me to get used to them. I got 180 10 mg's a month... but wanting to save more money I switched to the 15 mg Spansules, and it was garbage.
Generics are so hit and miss honestly regardless of what people, pharmacists, doctors(not mine)say. I've taken name brand Dexedrine SR, and it didn't seem to last longer but actually gave me more euphoria, more ability to eat, and more anger when it wore off. It seemed very smooth, but my crashes were bad on the namebrand.
The biggest differences when it comes to generic and brand I've found in meds are Klonopin, Adderall XR(the generic was totally different), and Wellbutrin. I might not be the right person to answer it because I went to Adderall for a long time, and now just got on Ritalin. However; soon I shall get Dexedrine again, cause Ritalin blows.
