View Full Version : New Prescription
joshgaskin 03-13-08, 04:55 AM Hello Everyone.
In recent post's i was talking about my personal ineffectiveness with the 5mg that the doc has recently prescribed me of Adderall.
I was prescribed this dosage, and was told to get back to her in 5-6 weeks about how i'm doing.
5mg hasn't had any effect on me. I was told to take 1 5mg dosage in the mornings and thats it. Since i have school, i've takin 10mg's in the mornings and it still doesnt do that much but it gets me through some of my classes.
I want to tell my doc that 5mg's wasn't enough and that i need more, but i'm afraid to tell her that i took more in order to get me through school.
If i get an appt, will she ask me to bring my meds and try and count it if i don't mention using more MG's then instructed?:confused:
Any Ideas? Advice? Experience?

I have never had a doctor ask me to bring my medication in so they could be counted, I never carry my entire prescription with me at one time - that would be disastrous if I should end up having it lost or stolen - I carry enough with me to last a day or two the rest stays locked up at home.
I would tell the doctor that 5 mg doesn't make any difference - however I have yet to meet a doctor that didn't get upset when patience increased their own dosages especially sense you are doubling yours - I admit 10mg of adderall a day isn't much but I am pretty sure upping the dose without consulting them upsets 99.9% of doctors.
If you know he is going to actually count them. Be HONEST. Just mention that 5mg did nothing and you wanted to try if 10mg did anything. Doc's have heard every single line ever created by people.. :) If you come off honest and lowkey about it.. He might give you a little tiff about not doing that stuff.. But hopefully he'll understand.
LittlePrincess 03-13-08, 07:24 AM Josh, how long have you known this doctor?
I've been in a similar situation. I had been seeing my doctor for over 3.5 years, so I had built up a good doctor-patient relationship with him. He gives me lots of flexibility with my meds (holidays, when I take my doses, etc.), so I know that he trusts me. Anyway, at the time I was prescribed 10mg of Dex IR twice daily. Well, that wasn't lasting long enough for me, so I started taking an extra Dex tablet in the afternoon on long days. At our next appointment I *nonchalantly* told him about this. I just said "I feel like the med is wearing off too quickly, so I've been taking an extra tablet in the afternoons. I feel like I would do better with a 3x/day prescription." He was cool with it and just wrote my next script for 10mg 3x/daily. No problems, no hassles, no lectures, no freakouts. :)
HOWEVER!!!! Like meadd said, this is NOT cool with most docs. I had been seeing my doc a long time and I knew he would be okay with it. Since you said this was a brand new prescription, I'm not sure that I would be quite so "honest" about taking more than prescribed... but it's up to you.
joshgaskin 03-14-08, 03:09 AM Haha, Yeah the whole fact that I just met this new doctor is a reason probably wouldn't mention that i'd been taking more than she prescribed. Maybe i should just say " I take 5mgs and it wears off in a hour or two (which is true). And that I feel like more would help me get the day". Yeah!:D:D
This doc in particular seemed like she had bad feelings towards Adderall to begin with, She wanted to put me on Welbutrin ( Less side Effects ), But i convinced her that Adderoll would be the best med for me.
So i think i'll just sched. an appt, Ask her to up the dosage, and hope she doesnt ask me to bring my medication!:p
LittlePrincess 03-14-08, 06:46 AM She wanted to put me on Welbutrin ( Less side Effects ), But i convinced her that Adderoll would be the best med for me.
Hmmm... what do you mean that you "convinced" her that Adderall was the best med for you?
joshgaskin 03-15-08, 12:09 PM Well, She was explaining to me that the Adderall had a lot of side effects that she wasn't comfortble with, such as Enlargement of the heart, High blood pressure, Weight Loss, Insomnia, and that ut can be come addicitve. She told me that as a doctor, she wasn't to take the "safest" approach. So at first she said she wanted to put me on Welbutrin (not a stimulant i don't think, but its a anti-depressant/something else). I explained to her that i Do get depressed, but it's mostly because i can't achienve things with the symptoms of ADD, and that I just need something to stimulate me to make my brain work like it's supposed to. I also told her i've taken a non-prescribed dose and that it had a positive effect on me. I told her i really just wanted a med that would help me get through work or school.
So, after seeming knowlegable about this whole scenario, she said "Ok, I'll start you on 5mg's of Adderall"
joshgaskin 03-15-08, 12:11 PM Haha, Excuse all of the typo's. I guess that's a typical thing for ADD'ers who don't proof-read. And I haven't taken my Adderall yet :) lol
LittlePrincess 03-15-08, 12:49 PM how did Adderall even come up? did you mention it first or did she?
just curious :)
joshgaskin 03-16-08, 09:05 AM I told her that one day Adderall caught my attention becuase a friend from school said he was using a "Focusing Drug" to help him in school and i asked him if i could try a dose of it. I explained to her that the effects of using it helped me a lot and i felt like I was a lot more focused. She said this wasn't "a good thing to do" but i got my point across about the Adderoll. First she objected because of the side effects, but i sweet talked her into perscribing me it :)

I must say.... You are darn lucky she agreed to prescribe it after telling her that story of you taking it illegally. Very, very lucky.
joshgaskin 03-17-08, 01:39 AM Yes, it was Psychology though. :D The whole point of me telling her that little story of mine, was to feed her desire for the quick fix theory that most Medication doctors stand by. The whole time she was trying to "figure out" what medicaton would work best for me ( Going by the book ) And me Personally, I don't want some doctor to just prescribe me a med that she's thinking 50/50 that it might work. I've done my research, and the Adderall is what i need, not some anti-depressant that supresses my emotional wrecklessness, but doesn't do anything for my ADD.
I didn't feel I was doing the wrong thing though, because I knew that Adderall would work. I was just trying to supply her with the knowledge she needed to understand why that prescrpition would best suit me.
OSUbeaver 03-17-08, 04:08 AM josh have you been diagnosed with ADD? i just find it odd that she would only give you 5mg a day to start with. I understand the whole start low dose work your way up, but 5mg seems very low. It seems as though she might be skeptical of whether your needing the medication is for its actual purposes... Also with you taking more then perscribed aren't u worried your going to run out before your suppost 2?
