Hi, my question to all is, what can be eaten and what shouldn't be eaten when taking dex. Ive read he're and there you shouldnt drink orange juice, but coffee is ok, then from another forum coffee is not ok, whilst another says eat mainly protein foods at breakfast.

Im new to taking dextroamphetamine and have taken 5mg ir for 1.5weeks. I can see that acid affects absorbtion of dex, but is it anything acidic or just orange/citrus juice? Are all acids equal? Is coffee only bad because of the caffeine, or is it acid? And what are ideal foods to be eaten around dosing?

Sorry if this has been covered before but im a bit confused, it doesnt seem very clear, and i tend to worry and think excessively about things like this, at least at the moment because it seems so new until i get used to it.

The simple way to explain it is dexedrine passes through the stomach and into the small intestine where it is absorbed. If the stomach pH is too low or acidic (b/c stomach acids are digesting food or an acidic beverage was recently consumed as an example) less medication will be properly absorbed. On the other hand, if the pH is alkaline (ie. higher pH) more or the intended amount will be absorbed.

Dexedrine can cause appetite suppression so many eat before they take it. I personally take my first dose an hour before I actually need to be awake because it does not effect my appetite and this is what works best for me.

I believe it's advised to take each dose with 8oz. of water/ a regular size glass. I'm thinking this may have to do with water being non-acidic or alkaline thus helping the medication getting absorbed properly. I hope this was somewhat helpful and remember this is just my understanding to the question you asked.

Mainly the deal with coffee is that it is both slightly acidic (though nowhere near as acidic as orange juice), and it contains caffeine which is known to amplify anxious and nervous feelings that amphetamine causes already. Two stimulants at once = even worse than either one alone.

All acids are not equal, it just so happens that orange juice is one of the most acidic foods or beverages you can consume, and most people happen to consume it in the morning when you take your Dextroamphetamine dose so it is recommended you avoid it.

I saw a table of acidic ratios, and i dont know if it is accurate or not but it said that an acid that is one ph point lower than another is approximately 10 times more acidic, and if there is a two point difference then it is 100 times more acidic. It described black coffee as having a PH of 5.5, and orange juice as a ph of 3.5 so orange juice is one HUNDRED times more acidic than coffee.

So to answer your question, orange juice and coffee are bad for the absorption, but orange juice is much worse. Coffee is mainly bad because it contains caffeine which compounds the nervous effects from Dextro amphetamine.

Hope this helps :)

Never been nervous on dex before... hmmm, more like nothing can bother me... as Luthien once described, it "melts" my anxiety and nervousness away.
