I'm stranded out in a little suburb with very little public transport... I feel so frustrated cos I can't just grab my board, go for a surf etc. Plus if I'm going a few places in a row have to cram everything into a little backpack!

Just got car back and now it has to get fixed again! Gah! Anyway, that's my rant :) I wouldn't mind so much if we had good public transport.

Heya Aloha, long time no see!

Kind of funny because Scatter & I actually just had this conversation the other night!

Personally, I go a little nutso when I am stuck in the suburbs without my car or a car.

For a year I lived in a city with crappy public transportation and spent a small fortune renting cars every weekend even if I didn't have anywhere specific to go...eventually I ended up buying myself a car :)

Actually, back in high school (long before I was diagnosed) I used to take impulsive 1000km+ weekend roadtrips with my parents car, what they didn't know couldn't hurt them.

I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have my truck. Whenever I feel angry, bored, or just the need to get out of the house because I know it'll be a long night, I hop in the front seat and floor it. I've been wanting to get a motorcycle for a while to ride with my friends, I think that'd suit me better.

Being in college with my truck kind of sucks. Everything is in walking distance almost so no need to use it as much. So annoying not being able to drive it everywhere I go.

I am perfectly content to stay home for weeks on end. But DO NOT take my car away. I need to know that I'm holed up by choice, rather than circumstance!

I'm exactly the same. I live in the country sometimes don't leave the property for over a week, but if I can't thats a whole other story. Boyfriend and I had a huge fight over that. Before I got my car, he kept putting off fixing my truck and using the fact I dont leave anyway. I was like this is the same as barefoot and pregnant! But even I had a problem with how I acted over it.

yeah I get stressed out, I dont like asking for lifts everywhere, I dont even know how public transport works. I hate being restricted, I often go out on impulse to buy something or go somewhere at almost any time of day. I normally get a hire car if its more than a day.

Lol - I know exactly what you mean. I just moved back to a small town after a few years in Southern California. I hardly ever drive more than 5-10 minutes now...I miss my freeway driving. :(

On the contrary, I find having a car makes me insane, as having a car is actually a car having you.

Well, I go insane if I feel trapped and so yeah, gotta have that car. Even more important is breathing room. Cities make me incredibly claustrophobic and if I start thinking about the number of people in an apt building before I go in I'll make myself totally nuts.

I grew up near a bunch of highways going across the country N/S and E/W... when I moved to a place where there weren't highways like that I would flip out whenever I thought about it b/c there weren't any escape routes. Somehow knowing you can get in your car and take off for a thousand miles any direction is really comforting.

That sounds like terrible anxiety to have... yikes. I don't understand feeling that way at all so I can't relate. There is safety in numbers.... um an apt building means there is lots of fun to be had... and more people to impress and or annoy with expressing yourself and their stupidity and ignorance rearing its oft reared head! :D

haha, well, I never thought about it b/c I thought everyone was that way. What's funny is I grew up in a big family and I like having lots of people around... I just gotta be able to move and not be trapped (4 walls or lots of buildings around = not good)

Usually the bbq's/parties are outside and involve horses, 4 wheelers, shotguns, or other fun stuff and lots of room to move. :p

Well I'm on the road again, woohoo! Feels so good.

Think a big part was I'm a surfer and I *need* to go to the beach, even if I don't surf. It's just so good for the soul. Just you and nature.

Yeah, I can be a homebody but it's having the choice to leave! Hate being trapped!

Exactly! I'm the same way, I can't stand feeling as though I am trapped, it makes me crazy. I also have to have my own car available because I have to do everything myself, asking for help is just something I can very, very rarely bring myself to do. Ironically, though, I find I most often feel trapped when I'm driving! I have absolutely no patience in traffic and get very upset, sometimes nearly to the point of panic, in traffic jams. One of my greatest embarrassments is how often I find myself sitting at the wheel screaming at the person in front of me (yes, out loud!) for not rushing through a yellow light and making me stop. :o
