I was reading and it was said there are two types of ADD in this respect.. I know there are many different subsets. I was wondering how everyone compared. The two I read about are multi task very well (get good results) or must work on one thing and finish it or it's likely I won't come back to it.

While I can multi task to a degree, I pretty much need to concentrate on one item at a time or nothing gets finished.

This is very true for me with cooking. I really can't keep track of more than two things at one time, or something will certainly get burned. I love making casseroles in the oven or fixing something in the crockpot because I can fix something to do with while they are cooking.

I might be able to get back to something if I'm interrupted, but it generally takes quite a while as I keep skipping from one thing to another as I notice something else needs to be done.

No doubt about it - I refer to myself as a uni-tasker. I cannot stand to stop something in the middle, and will ignore or snap at anyone who interrupts me.

As another example, if I step away from something that I'm cooking - as soon I put my attention on something else, it seems I immediately forget about the cooking until I smell it burning or hear it boiling over.

Both of these are regular events. I do not "learn" from it and do better next time. It is the main thing that led me here...looking for answers.

I can't answer the poll, lol.

There are some things and some times that I can, or even HAVE to, multitask.

There are other things and other times where I absolutely have to stick with one thing and follow through straight to the end.

I *can* multitask. BUT... there is a chance one or more of the jobs will not get done.

If I don't multitask, I risk boredom and not doing my best work.

There's really two aspects to this.

1. You can multi-task well, but when you do; you don't get things done.
2. You can multi-task well and get things done.

I find that I can multi-task well. I have to. I can't stand having only one thing to do. However, if I am to ever get anything done, I have to concentrate on only one thing.

I can't multi task at all or I'm too distracted for instance......
I hate when people talk to me when I drive, I'm a worse driver than I already am if you are talking to me.

My roomate trys to have conversations with me all the time when we are both doing our hw and I want to kill her. I can barely pay attention to my homework and I can barely pay attention to what she is saying!

I can multi-task, and I prefer to. But there's no guarantee of completion and no estimate on a time-frame.

I think I fall in the middle :). While I can multi task very well and get multiple things done. There are times that if I don't stick on the one task that will not get back to it, or I will but it won't be for months. To me its all about interest.

I can't do more than one thing at once, if I try, my head explodes. Also, if I don't finish one thing at a time, nothing will EVER get done, I never go back to things haha! Unless I'm absolutely forced to that is.

ahhah truee about the driving thing... no wonder people think i'm such a crazy driver. I pretty much only ccan pay attention to what is directly infront of me, not my surroundings. I don't know how I have never gotten in an accident.

Hahahahaha, none. I don't like doing one thing at a time; I must multi task but have problems finishing everything.

I can, and do multi task. BUT - task completion will be very much in doubt.

I have a strong need to multi-task, as I get painfully bored if I don't. "Painful" is absolutely literal - the boredom is intolerable.

I am usually doing at least 5 things at once. If I had enough time, they would all be perfectly done - but I run out of time and end up with nothing done. I have an average of 30 browser windows open at once, while on the phone, while eating, etc.

At work, I will find 15 emails at the end of the day that I have started, got diverted on, and never finished. Sometimes I am waiting for an answer only to realize I never finished the last line and sent the email in the first place. I usually have 10 Excel files open, all on different assignments, several Word files, plus 6 other databases, timecard, status, etc. I flit back and forth all day. As soon as an email comes in, I stop what I'm doing and race off to answer it, thinking it will be quick, then it gets involved, and I forget the other stuff.

Of course this is so much better than sitting there all day not even starting the emails, wandering around, getting distracted by something I hear and googling it, updating my calendar, checking the bulletin board... (stuff I did prior to meds).

I have learned if I don't finish something - especially if it has papers involved, I will never find them to do later. That doesn't mean I do finish them, I just am aware as I set them down that chances are I won't come back as soon as I need to.

It's almost automatic for me to have to multi-task. I feel as if I get way too bored sitting and doing one thing. Sometimes I get so caught up in multi-tasking, that I actually procrastinate some things because I don't have room for them in my brain or something, idk!

i defnitley multi - task. That usually involves thinking two - four different thoughts at once, usually starting with one, then going to the next and then the next and going back to the first one. It works alright, cept can get annoying if i forget one of the thoughts i previously had..
also tend to have 3 or 4 windows up on the screen on the computer. Not as bad as i used to be at that..thank God. Used to be like 7 screens up or something.
The main reason that i go on the computer so much is because it allows me to multi-task. While researching something interesting, i usually get stuck or interested on a subject within that subject and have to look that up. So i can have all diff screens up and sometimes not go back to the first subject I was looking at...
i think im getting better at it and getting back to previous screens etc..

I guess by this definition I'm a multi-taster, though I usually thought of it as starting several projects at once. Poor the record, I don't know that I'm ADD, maybe borderline. But I definitely have several projects all going at once and can't really stick with one till it's done; have to do something else after a short while. then maybe go back to the first one after a few days. though now that I think of it I'll often work on 3 or 4 projects in a single day. each for a little while.

Ciao :)
