View Full Version : I'm not ADD, you're just single minded...
I was reading a post about what our biggest fears are and I was sad to see that some are upset about being ADD. I made a mention about Steve Irwin... if you followed his shows and who he was he was a classic AD/HD person and I feel that's how we should all live our life, ADD and all.
There are a gazillion things I'd love to do, and that's the beauty of AD/HD: we're always ready to try something new. How many kids today are punished for that? Sad, yet we don't have a pill for the kids that don't try hard enough and don't care...give them some of what we feel hehe
Sure it's hard to be such a scatter brain, but it's only because our would is so intent on a 9-5 life. I succeeded in things most people find really hard because they are on such a schedule: army, my own kids. I had no problem waking up at 2am to nurse my babies. I was used to not sleeping much anyhow.
So what we're hyperfocused? I was so hyperfocused on getting breast feeding right and yet some of my friends insisted that "they needed their sleep" and never bothered trying.
So what we forget some appointments or some food in the microwave? There are people dying out there and we shouldn't get hung up about silly stuff.
So most days I feel like a jack-of-all-trades and master of none, but there's a place for us in this world and it's just a matter of finding that place :) I try not to get upset about it because its what makes me what I am... I wouldn't be me without it :) And hubby and my parents always get a good laugh with my stories with "remember the time you..."
I feel like I've hated myself for being this way my entire life in the outside world, especially when I found out I had a.d.d. I mainly feel the most comfortable with myself when I'm by myself. Or with someone who has a.d.d.... they are so hard to find though.
Being around people who are normal and calm makes me feel like I have to try to calm myself down and it's almost impossible to do. <--- Resulting in being upset with myself
I've never hated having ADHD. It provides a unique view of the world (one which is, fortunately, controllable through medication).
I can't even remember being frustrated with having it, but that could be because I've forgotten. Haha the irony.
I'd rather control ADHD with medication than not have it at all.
Michiko74 03-31-08, 12:54 AM While it may be true that we should appreciate the positives of ADHD, one shouldn't be quick to dismiss the pain or the struggles that are also a part of ADHD. And let's not forget that most of us spent years not knowing what our symptoms were.
I wholeheartedly agree that we need to embrace ADHD. But to know where you're going, you need to know where you've come from.
Awesome thread, when my weed brain fog clears I will contribute.
hahaha mincan---love the comment!

I love being able to forget frustrations so quickly !!
4gotAgain 04-01-08, 09:45 AM i used to be so angry and frustrated at my ADHD and sometimes still am.
But Ive come to accept it. I think there are alot of positive traits thta come with it, like out of box thinking, creativity etc. I think its what we chose to focus on.
Sure you usually do need organisation, memory etc to live a successful life...but the world also needs people who can think of new ideas and think from different points of view. Think of thomas edison, einstein, etc..
I think this forum is a great place anda big help. But i dont really come on here much anymore because it can seem quite negative...When i read some posts, i start thinking bout things im not good at...maybe we just need more positive thinking in general. Utilise our strengths?
just an idea...

Some ADHDer will likely save the day on some small space colony 100 years from now. :)

I agree with you and I'm a negative poster many times. Its hard when you have lots of frustrations and depression to be upbeat even when you know it will help. Plus sometimes you just gotta get it out. I do think if everyone can follow up with something they are greatful for when there really down it would help them and others. I have a friend who was treated for depression, she vollunteered for AIDS patients that had noone and was with them when they died. This sent her on a downward spiral and she was on a anti-depressent for awhile and also realized she just couldn't do that kind of vollunteer work anymore. She shared her grattitude book w/ me and it was so enlightning. She had put things in it that I also am very grateful for and never really noticed. Shes a writer so that helped w/ details. She said by focusing on good stuff every morning it kept her in a better mood.
4gotAgain 04-01-08, 08:31 PM nah, its all good, i can totally understand. I was the same negative typer not so long ago. I so know what you mean about getting it out as well. Sometimes tho, i think that the more you think about your problems, the bigger they seem to be?
im really starting to love the hyperfocus, creativity etc of ADHD, there must be a reason why we have it?
I like having a label....FINALLY! LOL. For some reason, that makes me feel more....more.....normal (?) More something. I only wish my husband would accept my forgetfulness. He's WAY too serious. I'm constantly telling him to calm down, it'll be ok. It'll show up eventually.....He never listens to me. I try to cuddle and he'll complain "We need to get the trash taken out!!!" like the trash man is gonna get there in 5 minutes (we put it out the night before). I know he means well but geesh.....
Uh, what was this thread about? LOL. Back to work.....(I need to add that to my signature!)
4gotAgain 04-01-08, 08:40 PM lol see uneek your post is exactly what i like about adhd, just the whole creativity of it, how boring would my mind be without out, all our minds lol..the world even lol..sure you were off topic but it made us all laugh (me anyways!!)
men ay..?
texasmissb 04-01-08, 10:12 PM I think that we're psycholgically interesting! Everyone has always told me I should write a book and I becha all of you all are the same!
my dad told me I should write a book the other day, because I express myself so well. I had no idea? He was saying most writers write one page a day for their books. That wouldn't be too hard for us adders.
It made me think..... I should totally write a book about all my struggles, all the things I learned and how I overcame them someday.
Or ya know what? We should like all put all our ideas together and write a book.
I kind of want to be want to be an a.d.d. specialist and really do the research of how to cure us. It'd be so much easier to diagnose people when you actually have your own experience of what they are going through.
Then again i want to be and do a lot of things ;)
I love being able to forget frustrations so quickly !!
I forget a lot of things quickly. Sometimes it means I can relearn something all over again with the same amount of awe and incredulity as the first time I did it, with a strange tingling sense of deja vu.
completely can relate to that...... I do that when I read your posts. Then I'm like o yea I already read that as I get half way through :)
4gotAgain 04-02-08, 03:15 AM the idea about writing a book, is excellent. I think you are a really interesting writer kwalk. I love reading your posts..
:)

4gotAgain 04-02-08, 03:25 AM same here..

it probably doesnt help that we are spread out all over the world..

I've always wanted to go to every country and just like do everything i could do there that was fun/maybe learn a few historical things (depending if they were stimulating enough to listen about) and then go to the next one. Then I could visit all of you guys. what kind of jobs would work with that?

4gotAgain 04-02-08, 03:45 AM kwalk..thats exactly what i want to do..go to every country and do everything exciting possible. When i was 15 i brought a huge map and stuck it on my wall. I planed to stick a pin in every country i visited. I used to go to the travel shop and cut out pictures from the travel pamphlets and stick them on my wall.

I had like 6 or 7, half of them had -$25 in them lol..dont ask..And the guy was like, "So what should i do with the $1200 in your house fund and the $800 in your retirement?." I swear I almost had a heart attack haha..
