I heard an interview with Paul Simon once in which he explained that he doesn't actually like that song. Isn't that amazing? He doesn't like the last stanza because they added it (with all that rich instrumentation) to make it more commercially viable. Simon said that he thought that it sounded like it was two different songs. Huh. Boy. I love it. I guess that's the difference between an artist and the average Joe (or Jane, in this case).

There is a song that I have somehow ended up being drawn to at a couple periods of transition in my life, which is what I take your words to mean about giving strength. It is Got to Begin Again, by Billy Joel, off of the Cold Spring Harbor album, and it goes:

It makes me smile, to think he goes so far for love, and that reminds me that there are alot of people with so much more struggles than i whom inspire me. At the end ov this movie a song sung by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (hawiian artist) sings somewhere over the rainbow / what a wonderful world in one song, very hawiianish version.

Sometimes, when I was feeling really bad and believed that the whole world was against me, my guy would hand me a little card with two words on it - Fight it!

As I struggled to deal with things and try to get across to him that I would be okay, and that I just had to ride it until it passed, I often handed him a bit of paper with some poetry on it or some song lyrics, anything that would say what I could not. These lyrics bring back memories of those days.

It's not always just the lyrics, sometimes it's the music too. I'm not going to post all the lyrics here, but "Wasted Years" by Iron Maiden is one of my all time faves (google it!). For some reason both the words and the sound of that song are motivational to me.

"The Last in Line" and "Rainbow in the Dark" by Dio aren't particularly positive, but they sound like they were written about people like us, so they make me feel not so alone.

Also, not to be too cliche and cheezy (who me?), but "Imagine" by John Lennon is awesome, and though I don't listen much anymore, "Vincent" by Don McLean always makes me cry, (guys do that alone in their car when nobody's looking sometimes), to the point that I just can't finish singing it (I grew up with this song, long boring story).

To do a 180 degree turn from those songs, I like "I don't want to change the world" by Ozzy, just because of the chorus- "I don't wanna change the world, I don't want the world to change me".

Oh yeah, even though I'm a confirmed heretic, I love to hear Amazing Grace on the pipes (What song don't I love to hear on the pipes?)

Well I'm willing to put myself out there and say that some really cheesy pop lyrics have given me strength!
