Able Laboratories announced its abbreviated new drug application to market a generic equivalent of Ovation Pharmaceuticals' Desoxyn tablets in 5-mg strength has been approved by the FDA. Able's methamphetamine HCl tablets (USP 5-mg CII) are indicated for the treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and exogenous obesity.

Honestly, it was becoming absurd that my Rx for Desoxyn(390-5mg's a month) was costing $525!! This is if you didn't have insurance of course, but still. I don't think I can think of another medication other than the 160mg Oxycontins(I did a search one day to find a rival!) proportionate to a usual months supply.

I had been writing for years pleading with the FDA to allow Desoxyn go generic. Afterall, what other medication out there that you've heard of that has been on the market for upwards of 45 years without a generic?! And I know for a fact that in all sense and purposes, that there are far worse abusable medications with far greater chances of overdosing and dying(opiods/benzodiazipams) that did have generics and a prolific black market distribution system and I've never seen their prices go past the point of ridiculous!!

My point here is that Desoxyn is so stigmatized with it's generic name being methamphetamine that it's treated no different than the illicit methamphetamine on the streets. So the result is it's unavailable as an option for tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people with ADD/ADHD who may think they're "managing" their ADD/ADHD tendencies and such with their current medication whereas they might discover like I did that the ability to hyperfocus into complete and total comprehension so as to become an enhanced productively, producing, contrusctive, abstract globular, and crazy at the critical thinking skills!!

Hell man for me nothing felt better than the feeling of making that complete connection in my neurons that hadn't been made before. And it wasn't until Desoxyn that this had happened. That feeling alone is the greatest high next to skydiving!! I grew up with the most God awful disconnected lot of neurons on my brain that school was so dreadful that by fifth grade I had faked sick almost half of all of the schooldays for both semsters.

Cronic cases of ADD/ADHD need to be treated with the appropriate medicine just like for pain patients!!

It pains me to think of all the people out there with our condition that never made that connection in their hardwired neurons that I am referring to.

Methamphetamine is prescribed for a reson and it isn't obesity.

It's for folks like me and narcoleptics. And I'll be damned that one will need to increase their dosage to double that of whatever dosage was found to be their plateau. I've read about narcoleptics taking Desoxyn for thirty five years and only increasing the dose by ten miligrams.

I remember man when it was time for finals I was first one done and we're talking by almost always, about 15-20 minutes ahead!! I didn't need that extra time that schools are required to honor for us covered by the American Disabilities Act.

I would simply get in the zone and hyperfocus my way through as if it were on cruise control!! And my grades represented that I knew the course curriculum.

Now if you were to watch me in High School it wouls've been like night from day!!

Anyways, I encourage including this medication in ones exploratory pursuit had they found their current medication wasn't making that appropriate connection in their brain.

At least Desoxyn is available in the US - It's not in Canada, for some reason (I guess the "abuse" potential - people hear methamphetamine and instantly think of street drugs). My pharmacist was even suspicious of my dexedrine scrip.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here. The first med I was given for ADD was the Stattera, I was taking 40 mg a day, because I wasn't really comfortable with the jump from 40 to 80 that the Dr (who I wasn't crazy about anyway) wanted me to do. It seemed to do ok for the most part. I found I was focusing a little better but I quit due to some negative sexual side effects (and after 6 mos of Hormone Hell back the first of the year and finally getting THAT straightened out I wasn't about to let something screw it up again! Sorry..that may have been TMI but anyhoo...) The second Dr. I went to who was much more familiar with Adult ADD (and not a fan of Stattera as a first round draft pick) put me on Adderall 10 mg. He said he knew that was probably to low of a dose but to try it for 2 weeks and we would assess from there. I go back today. The 10 mg twice daily was not getting it for an 17 hr day. If I do 10mg as soon as I wake up (about 6:15 am) then 5 mg about 8:30 am OR 15 mg as soon as I wake up I'm ok till about 12:30, then I take either 15 mg. again or 5 mg. then 10 mg about 2:00 or so. I'm having to play with several ways to avoid the headaches if I'm to late with a dose. I tried Metadate CD and MY GOD!!! I felt like my head was stuffed with cotton and going to explode! So that's a no go. Back in the day, some of my most productive, organized, focused periods were on the rare occassion when I did try 'street meth'. I didn't really get that from the old Dexadrines, cocaine was horrible (tried it and just felt like someone had put a hot curling iron down my throat) Never a 'rush' or 'high' from any 'stimulant', but a feeling of 'normalization' and productivity from the meth. I am however very hesitant to even mention to the Dr. about the possibility of trying the Desoxyn. It's my understanding that it is rarely prescribed and when it is it is sort of a 'way down the list' option. Any input from anyone who has taken it and can compare the results to the other meds?

Alexa,
If your new ADHD doctor has experience treating adults, he is likely used to seeing people with a history of self-medication, and MAY not be as bothered by it as you think - but then again he might, it's a bit of crap shoot. The fact that he doesn't like Strattera as a first line treatment is a good sign, in my opinion - most Doctors seem to be quick to jump on to the Strattera bandwagon, partly as a way to cover their butts if questioned about their prescribing practices. My guess is that he would try playing with the Adderall dosage and perhaps use an extended release version before he prescribes Desoxyn. If I were in your shoes I would tell him about the past drug use and the way the methamphetamine made you feel, but I'd try not to push for a scrip for Desoxyn, since it may seem like you're "drug seeking". If the other options he suggests don't work out, then I'd request it specifically. Since Doctors do have to pass scrutiny of their prescribing practices, it would be unusual for a Dr to try methamphetamine early on in the treatment process, since he might well have to explain his reasoning to regulatory officials at some later date, and as you know, there is a stigma attached to the drug because it's so frequently used recreationaly.
Regards,
Greg

Thanks Gregster. That does make me feel a bit better (and after yesterdays session I could use it!) He did switch me to Adderall XR 20 mg. twice a day. Took the first dose this morning and feeling a little 'spacey'. Didn't have that with the regular Adderall. I'll go with this and see what happens. Hopefully it will work and I can experience better living through chemistry
