View Full Version : Caesarean section and consequences
Hi,
Does anyone know if there are any consequences caused by an emergency/planned caesarean with regards to ADHD or other "disorders"?
I am happy for any comment!

I would hazard a guess that delivery by C-Section is easier on the baby than a long, hard, natural delivery.
FrazzleDazzle 04-03-08, 09:58 PM You mean for the baby, right? Are congrats in order???!!!
You pose a loaded question. (Weeks of reading research if one is interested)
First thought, whatever is in mum's bloodstream drugwise also enters baby's bloodstream, painkillers, anesthetic, etc. As long as all goes well and there is no oxygen deprivation, all should be fine with baby's neurology. OBs are getting away from general anesthetic, and using the epidurals or regional anesthetics which is a good thing for baby.
Second thought, cesareans can still be hard on baby, as forceps or extractors are often still used, but the likelihood of the neck twisting (neurology being affected here) associated with vaginal births is much less.
Bottom line, it all depends on the situation in which a cesarean is performed. Any difficulties will definitely increase the chances of that delicate neurology being affected.
Good point about the anesthesia, FD.

do you mean for an ADHD pregnant mother, or for consequence to the baby?
sorry, of course I meant the consequence for the baby. I was just going back in history wondering what if.... No painkillers or anesthetic were used that I know. After a normal birth binding hormons are released to the baby during a c-section not.... So maybe you see where I am coiming from. I know that is or could be a big topic which is little known about so far.
I just wanted to think lound and get your thoughts!
Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,
I've had both an emergency and a planned C-section. Both turned out fine (although since my first child was 6 weeks early she had to be in Neonatal ICU for a week. Traumatic or premature births can make it more likelh that the child will have ADD. The C section itself shouldn't cause trauma for the child unless their was a difficult labor before that. C-section is actually fairly easy on the child.
As far as the mom goes, I have ADD and it didn't seem to make it any better or any worse. I did suffer some post partum depression, but I'm sure that was hormonal rather than C-section induced.
My second child was born by C-section full term and was very healthy. One and probably both kids have ADD, but then both their parents do too, so that was a pretty likely outcome.
Congratulations -- if you're a new parent!
labored for 4 days ...from Dec 25th, to Dec 29th.. kept being sent home because the doctor didn't want to have to do anything over holiday... water finally broke and decided it for him...
Labored hard from 5 a.m. to noon..before the second doctor on call came on duty and decided it was time to do something positive.
This after I was given meds to hurry the labor. ...watching the monitor drop to 25 every time there was a contraction. Then back up again..... all day long.
The pains were excruciating, doubling me in half... while laying in the hard hospital bed.
Second doctor ..... advised nurse to give shot to stop labor and put me out. .... it was causing too much stress for mother...and most definitely the child. Prepped for surgery. Knocked completely under, because the contractions were too strong.
Daughter born by C-section... complications..Chord around neck, 6 X
Wake up ... nurse pressing on stomach. I felt like I'd been hit by a truck.
Long story ... shortened... by a long long stretch.. this was our oldest daughter....
ADHD
If you have researched.... one of the things that has been said to cause ADHD.... is a traumatic birth.
thanks guys for sharing these traumatic moments. I remember my mom giving birth to a dead baby. No doctor or nurse was around.... I dont know how you (females) can put up with this! Respect! Big time!
My own birth was not traumatic. I had one emergency and one scheduled C-Section for my two children. My first and only labor was too mild, didn't progress and baby started showing signs of distress. Fortunately, the ob/gyn at the big city maternity hospital didn't believe in postponing the inevitable so he advised surgery only eight hours after I checked into the hospital. My scheduled C-Section was supposed to be a trial of labor, but the small city hospital lost their only ob/gyn a month before my due date. Who knows what might have happened.

Big time!I've had far worse surgery than a C-Section and at least you get a really cute gift to take home. :D
MJwatson 04-04-08, 01:15 AM I am ADD...I had 2 c-sections. I know ADD is genetic bit as for birthing medications...I have no idea the effect. I could agree with Mary about a traumatic birth having an effect.
Mine were planned though...big heads.....:D In other words, I wasn't rushed in for emergency surgery....
Are you pregnant Tom??? ;)

I'm glad they weren't traumatic...
When I had the twins, I was on bed rest for 5 months... went into labor..at 5 a.m. again. I had spinal block for them... but one of them poked a hole in the amniotic sac............ long story short, but got fluid in their lungs.. oxygen cut off for a bit...They've both got learning disabilities, but never diagnosed with ADHD.
For youngest.. hers was scheduled.. no problems during pregnancy.. no troubles during delivery. She's healthy most of the time. No learning problems and definitely no sign of ADHD..
