View Full Version : VERY Basic Question
UVicJOS 04-09-08, 02:51 AM I have a very basic question, the answer to which could explain a LOT of things.
After regularly taking Dex for quite some time (over 3 months regularly, and on and off for a year before that) am I supposed to still feel the happy / talkative etc effects?
Reason being -- Those effects seem to be disappearing with me as time goes on, so I started (with the permission of my retarded doctor) taking a little bit more. Originally I was on 10mg for 3-4 hours as needed, but now I take 10mg, and then take another 5mg two hours later (to prolong the effects).
What scares me is that some adverse side effects are appearing Today I felt short of breath/tight chest for about 5-6 hours (hours after taking meds too. . .). I also feel like the effects are just not lasting very long at all. I am quite confused!!!
You're starting to reach the point I'm at where taking more makes your body have weird reactions and taking the same dose doesn't give the same results it once did. Kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I got that weird breathing thing too. To the point where I cut my dose down a bit and now it serves better as a decongestant than anything else.
That was more Adderall though. Dexedrine is better but I can tell its headed to the same fate as Adderall.
Why this happens, I do not know.
Because it may not be the right med... if you're experiencing tightness in your chest.. please see your doctor as soon as possible. It's trying to warn you. Please do not let this go without checking it out...and ask if the doctor can run tests, etc.. to see if you're damaging your heart.
Rags847 04-09-08, 11:40 AM Stimulants cause a little tightness in the chest/shortness of breath. Normal. I wouldn't be so alarmed unless it is really severe. You are giving your body more stimulation and energy to get things done. Channel and use that gift.

But when it's to the point of lasting 5 or 6 hours... I would have it checked. JMO
Like most drugs, it's an open ended experience. It's what you make of it. The best example of this is cannabis, but most are like that too. Expectations, etc.

Please keep in mind that this forum is for the discussion of legally prescribed drugs used to treat ADHD.
If you want to discuss drugs that do not fit that criteria then please PM the member you want to discuss those things with, or discuss them in another forum here at the ADHD Forums where they are allowed.
Sorry, but I feel that this point is important to those taking medications for ADHD. The drugs prescribed for ADHD are just as "PYSCHOTROPIC" as the other I mentioned, and gives perspective for those using stimulants. Pretty much is what you make of it.

I can appreciate what your saying man, and I am not trying to take anything away from the point that you made about cannabis. However, the rules of the medications forum limit the discussions here to only those medications which are legally used for ADHD.
QueensU_girl 04-09-08, 06:03 PM Short of breath (dyspnea), or fast breathing (tachypnea) can mean too much stimulant. (Had that happen with Ritalin.)
iirc, Normal respiration rate is 12-20/min in an adult male.

No.

Are you sure it's your doctor who is retarded? Try doing even 5 minutes of research on your medication.
UVicJOS 04-12-08, 06:26 PM To arzone - yeah the fellow I was seeing was quite stupid. He didnt know anything about Dexedrine beyond : it is for people with ADD. He had to refer to a medication guide to help me out, and it wasnt particularly useful. I knew more than he did, and ended up telling him most of the relevant information. But never the less, i found someone wayy better who knows his stuff.
The shortness of breath etc, was me having a panic attack. I went to my new doc the next day and he said it was just a simple panic attack. Because my medications had stopped being effective 2 days before a graduate level economics exam, in retrospect I can understand why I was panicking.
The doctor ended up increasing my dosage, and told me that I was simply becoming resilient towards it, which as I know is quite common. I just didn't want to start increasing my own dosage. He ended up saying that because I'm taking relatively low dosages as it was (~15mg for 4-5 hours) that increasing the dose by 5-10mg would have minimal averse effects, and he was definitely right.
Ever since increasing my dosage (3-4 days ago) I have had NO trouble sleeping which is just stellar, my stomach has been a little calmer, and I find the rebound isnt as bad either. its kind of weird.
