View Full Version : Question about Meds
Why take medication when it is not a permanent solution? How do people ease of their meds? Since it causes a crash (relapse) why take it at all?
It doesn't make sense to me why someone would climb a rock knowing they will fall right off.

you're gonna find the right med eventually that doesn't do that. You might have to take it twice a day or take another pill to stop the crash, but you're gonna find the right mix. Just keep trying :)
Um.....ok. Thanks for the encouragement. Some how I can't get a straight forward answer from anyone.
Why do I ask?? gee i don't know. MAYBE CUZ IM ON MEDS.
Why do I ask?? gee i don't know. MAYBE CUZ IM ON MEDS.I know why I take medication; if I didn't, I wouldn't continue to take it.
Ok. Its to take care of depression and also treat ADD.
I guess I'm used to taking medication to fully get rid of stuff. But in this case its different. I guess you just cant get rid of these things by popping a pill.
How long have you been taking this medication?
y00ch, what medication are you taking?
wifeandmom 04-19-08, 07:47 PM Yooch, the reason people take meds for ADHD is because they have a chronic condition. It isn't like a sinus infection. It's more like asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. You can make modifications to your lifestyle to help with the symptoms of those conditions; taking medication controls the symptoms further, but meds can't eliminate or "cure" the condition.

Why take in water when it is not a permanent solution? How do people ease off their water? Since it causes a crash (relapse) why take it at all?
I know why. Because it is what we currently have. We haven't found a permanent solution. Many problems exist where we do not have permanent solutions. The condition is significant enough to warrant even a "temporary" solution.
y00ch, did the pharmacy give you a handout about the drug you have started taking? The information can give you an idea of how long a medication takes to get into your system and affect your brain. How long treatment takes also depends what you are treating. Long term undiagnosed depression will often take longer to treat than a situational depression.
I used Wellbutrin to assist me in quitting smoking. I was told to take only one pill per day for the first three days and then increase to two pills per day. I was also told to wait two weeks before giving up cigarettes, the reason being to make sure the full effect of Wellbutrin was in my system so I could be more successful in my attempt to quit. I waited a full month of being on Wellbutrin before giving up the cigarettes and it worked for me.
morethanadiagno 04-20-08, 01:33 PM y00ch, psychmeds aren't like "happy pills" they just work to give you back a part of yourself that's taken by ADHD, depression, and so on. Like Imnapl said it can take up to six weeks for most antidepressants to take any effect so chances are you wont notice, at least at first. If it works you wont feel "high," you'll just feel like yourself minus the depression. The majority of ADHD medicines take effect much quicker so you could begin to notice the first or second day, unless you're takeing strattera, which can take 2-6 weeks.
hi there

what is it you want to get rid off?
for me adhd is not a disease . im not looking for cure . im looking for souport in my way to achieve my goals . when you need others to value you . when you work in systems who cannot allow freedom of thought , time ...and demand a certain way of doing things . and i want at certain point to be in them . i use my meds . nothing to cure ...i will at certain point be in a position that i will dictate the pace and the way ill do things . then who knows maybe i will not take the meds . but now they help me to accomedate .
peace

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice.
I quit smoking cigarettes regularly 3 months ago. So the wellbutrin is for ADD and depression.
The handouts and the doc said take 1 pill for 1 week. then up the dose to 2 pills.
I want to especially thank Dotan for reminding me that its not a curse or a cold. Its a permanent blessing.
its the blessing part I have trouble with . i just don't see it yet. I mean I understand how we're like different and stuff. Creative. and all that jazz but I just haven't seen the benefits myself.
I mean. the proof is not there yet. I've lost many many jobs. Relationships are a joke. Blah Blah Blah. I'm struggling a lot. And perhaps this is just my life and I should except it.
A very knowledgeable scholar told me that the life of this world, meaning our physical existence is supposed to be about struggle. That we struggle once we come out of our mothers womb and even death is a struggle too. And its soooo true. I've experience both.
y00ch, congratulations on quitting smoking - a triumph for someone with ADHD, in my opinion.
Give the Wellbutrin a chance, but in my experience, it didn't do much for my ADHD symptoms. I still take it because it makes my Ritalin work better now that I don't smoke.
Why take medication when it is not a permanent solution? I've never heard of a "permanent solution" for anything in this life, except death I guess. Based on your line of thinking, I would like to ask you why should anyone live when they know they're going to die? Dying is what the living do.
I happen to believe strongly in every persons right to improve (or attempt to improve) their quality of life whenever possible. What might improve my life, might not improve another's life.
How do people ease of their meds? If you are referring to prescription stimulants, then I can tell you that I do not need to "ease" off of them like I would need to do for something like caffeine for instance. I just stop taking them whenever I feel like stopping, and I suffer no ill effects whatsoever. I stop every weekend.
Since it causes a crash (relapse) why take it at all?The word relapse means: "Failure to maintain a higher state," and "deteriorate in health," and "to go back to bad behavior," just to name a few. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/relapse
The word "crash" and "relapse" are often used when describing what drug addicts experience. We are not drug addicts here. We are patients who are utilizing drug therapies that are prescribed to us by doctors based on a particular medical diagnosis that each of us have been given.
It doesn't make sense to me why someone would climb a rock knowing they will fall right off. That is a poor analogy in my opinion. Does it make sense as to why someone would live knowing that they are going to die? Tomorrow is promised to noone.
I understand quite clearly why someone would take these medications, but that does not mean that I, nor anyone else can explain why it would make sense to you.
Just because something can be understood, does not mean that something can be explained. You and I can both understand what the sun looks like. However, that does mean that you or I can explain what the sun looks like to a blind man. We can certainly try to explain it, but the fact is that somethings can only be understood.
I hope that one day you might develop a better understanding as to why something that "doesn't make sense" to you makes quite a lot of sense to others.
Pauligirl 04-22-08, 06:36 AM Simple!
For my back pain caused by a herniated disc I sometimes take prescription pain medicine because I can do the things I need to get done like work, school, shopping, exercise.
For my brain fog concentration problems I take medication for my ADD condition because I can do the things I need to get done like work, school, shopping, exercise.
It doesn't matter that neither one of these meds are a permanent soultion. With them I am able to function sucessfully! Without them, I'm not always optimal in my functioning.
