My son has been seeing a child psychiatrist for two years now and suddenly in the last 6 months I have to HOUND him to get med refills. It usually takes 5 phone calls to get the meds called in to the (correct)pharmacy - he wasn't on stims for a while. Now we have decided to put him back on Adderall and have his pediatrician write the scrips - but they won't do it either wtihout first getting the notes from the psych. (who knows how long that will take!). The psychiatrist has been vertually no help (except for actually writing the scrips) and now that he is on meds that can't be suddenly stopped -no one with refill them! Anybody have similar issues with the un-medical profession? Any thoughts?
sooooo frustrating.
You may have to change doctors, although I know from reading that they're sometimes hard to find. I'm not sure what part of Virginia you're in, but here is a list of doctors that may help:

Check the rest of the section too, it may have some info that you may need:

It seems that since all the laws changed last year that doctors are growing in number that are refusing to prescribe for their ADHD patients. It has become a fight for many to find help. If these links don't help in some way, let me know and I'll do a search.

Is there a change at the office? It's odd that after things working for such a long time that this has suddenly become a problem. Have you talked with the doctor about it? Maybe he/she is unaware of the issue since much of this is handled by the office staff.

Send a letter to the Doctor's office asking for prompt filling of Rxs, otherwise you will be contacting the State's Medical Board and infoeming the Board about how this doctor's office has been untimely on Rxs. Follow through if the doctor's procedures don't change but then you will likely have to get a new pdoc.

I believe there is a set time frame that records have to be sent once they're requested. Of course, it doesn't sound like your psych has much interest in following timelines! But place the phone call or request that your ped office call immediately. You'll probably have to go in to sign a release form, so ask that they have it ready and available for you on X-day at Y time (during business hours, of course). If he's a real piece of work, he may bill you an outrageous amount for photocopy charges (that happened to me with an ob once), but it'll probably be worth the $20 or so. He may also tell you he has to send them direct to the ped through the mail. That may be a state by state thing, but I'm not sure. I've hand delivered my records from one doc to another in the past.

So I finally got in touch with the psychiatrist's assistant. She is at least going to take care of the current Rx crisis AND I asked her to send me a summary of my son's treatment so far so we can switch doctors!
After blowing off steam in my excercise class this morning, I was given the names of some other doctors in town. I will be making some phone calls this afternoon.:) Actually, one of them is a pediatrician who specializes in treating kids with ADHD, asperger's, OCD, etc (which would solve both of my problems right now!). So things are looking decidedly better now than they were this morning.
Thanks for all of the support and ideas.
