For 15 years I worked for the government in environmental programs. I am a 100% green guy and always have been. I am really wanting a 100% environmentally positive job in a truly positive company or agency.

I have always been viewed as a technician by people as working with or on machines is easy for me. But inside is a manager trying to get out. I also am a real can do sort of guy, I have a hard time coming up with ideas that work, but should an idea be passed on to me, I can ponder it, discover its fallacies or make it so (with the right budget). All this is really intuitive to me.

I have a BS in geology but standard hard rock or engineering geology bores me to death. I find environmental work quite energizing. I am having a heck of a time getting a job as an environmental geologist working on contaminated sites. I seem to not even be able to obtain interviews for entry level jobs, as this would be a career change for me.

I am thinking about trying to move to something really new and different in the green economy but wondering how I could sell myself. I have been through two career counselors that advocate I pursue the environmental geologist option. But I am concerned because I am way more environmentally concerned that most in these jobs, and secondly I really don't want more boring jobs as a technician.

Now I am quite in a muddle about the whole 'which job do I want thing'. Gimme some opinions on what to do. Suck it up, or keep looking for a dream job.

What about government work, Analogdog? I'm thinking state/federal agencies?

I've been looking at Government jobs too, but, after 15 years with the Government, it would be cool to do something more exciting and valuable.

I just realized reading another of your posts that you had to have been in government work before. Sorry, dude.

Lots of law firms hire consultants in that area, btw. You ever looked into being an expert witness? You'd be your own boss. Past government workers are a good choice for that...
