Does anyone know the answer to this?

I am soon traveling from Canada to the Netherlands via San Francisco. I will stay in San Francisco for two weeks, visiting family there, and then travel on to the Netherlands.

Thing is that my doc gave me a prescription for a 2 months (60 day) supply of dexedrine spansules (50 mg/d) so that I have a bit of a supply to last me while I seek a doc in the Netherlands. I have no idea if they will want to diagnose me yet again, so that might not even be enough. But it is better than nothing.

I asked my pharmacist and he did a bit of research on the regulations and came up with this: that as long as you keep the medication in the bottles they came in, have a letter from the doc that prescribes them, declare them at the border, and dont have more than a 60 day supply, I should be OK. But I hear so many stories about the US customs, that it scares me a bit. Can any of you confirm that the above is ok?

Aw. We have to declare??? (Going to Mexico and back in the end of May.)

I'm traveling with boyfriend and his family. I don't want his parents to know I have ADD...

I have never had any issues with customs myself as it pertains to prescription medications.

I have just made sure to keep them in their prescribed container, which has the same name and address that I have on my drivers license. I was never told to bring a note from my Dr, although I do not see how that would hurt anything.

I hope your travels go well, and I hope that you are able to report having no trouble with customs. Please keep us posted as to how everything unfolds. ;)

L, my Doc gave me a letter too, just in case, but I wasn't questioned at all. The medication was left in my toiletry bag, and it wasn't even opened.
I was only going interstate though, so it may be different.

I believe it's possible to get greater than a 30-day supply of a CII medication in some contexts (such as mail order, for example). I also believe the 30-day limit is not a federal law, but a state law (that exists in most states). So I don't think that they would have a good case.

Aww I wanna go to the Netherlands :(
Why? It's small, flat, and full of traffic jams :p
It's that my family and friends lives there, I think I would rather live in .. like Italy, or Greece, or maybe Ireland. Or Scotland.

I wanna see Alice Springs and the outback say G'day to all the Bruces. And have a beer in the scorching sun. And having that wonderful laid-back Oz accent around me all day .. for some reason it never fails to make me cheer me up :)
In my previous job here we had a guy from Oz .. and also, one from South Africa. At first I could not tell the accents apart .. but now I can!

Oh yes, and then I want to go to NZ to experience all that LOTR scenery!

Must definitely do that.

Hey - but if you want to go, why dont you?

I'm going to California for 3 weeks in July... I'll just have them in their bottles with the name and address on my driver's license... won't declare them, and won't have any problems.

It sounded like Switzerland so I assumed they were similar or close by :o I want to go to Switzerland you see - in fact I want to go pretty much everywhere.

Can't afford it at the moment. I've been all over Australia, it's a beautiful country but I'm kind of bored of it to be honest. I think I just need an overseas trip to start appreciate it again (or look at traceys photos :p)

Ireland is great. The people are very funny but it's a little rainy and cold for me to stay there too long.

yeah Ireland is great. Lots of magic still hanging around there.

BTW I passed customs without any problems. They did not ask - I did not have to tell .. nor wave the letter of my friendly (Irish!) psychiatrist.

They did open up my bag and fussed around in it .. completely ignored the two bottles of dexedrine and fished out my toothpaste, which appeared to be too large .. can only take 100 ml in carry on luggage. Mine was 130 ml. So they nicked it. But, in a friendly way, I must admit.

Ah crap, i really want my carry on luggage to go with me, would one be able to take a backpack on board with them and have it in their lap? or stick it above their head in one of those storage thingys? Ive never been on a jet before.

there are limitations to the size of your carry on bags .. they usually have some thing standing at the luggage check-in to check whether it's too big or not. Things bigger than that are not allowed, because in the case of an emergency, they would become obstacles .. I think that's the rationale behind it.

Normal backpacks are fine. The US (and I assume Canada) allow "1+1": one bag plus one "personal item", which can include a backpack. In the sane world carry-on bags can usually be up to 22"x14"x9". A bag that's labeled as 22" is usually 23", so keep that in mind.

Most North American airlines unofficially have the policy that if you can lift it into the overhead bin, it's not too heavy. Mrs. fxfake just carried two meter-long (i.e. too big) poster tubes onto a flight without problems (thankfully, since she arrived at the airport as the flight was boarding).

It's best to check the airline web site.

Of course some European, Asian, Aussie, etc. carriers limit carry-on bags to 7kg
