(Ex. "Adderall XR"), 2)Both AND and OR logic should be supported directly in the basic search...isn't was is it must be the all caps words or it is ignored.

I've noticed how much more useful Google is in finding things here as the standard search (incl. adv) catches to many things and it is hard to narrow down.

Point taken. But as far as other websites go, ADDforums isn't bad. Some other sites time out on every search, no matter how restricted you make it. It is common knowledge in genealogy circles that a not for profit church website has a remarkable search function for their free records compared with other for a fee websites.

Can we get one that likes me - this one hates me for some reason - hmm could be the dyslxia thing - seach engines - well computers in general are not dyslexia friendly at all.

Personally I have better luck with google - it doesn't seem to have problems finding topics with in this forum - I just have to remember to limit the search to this forum.

Google uses a type of search called a boolean search where you can use different characters & + - "" to customize your search options. I'm pretty sure that there is an option in vbulletin to turn boolean searches on, only downside is that is processor intensive :(

I don't know if this should be in the same thread or not, but has anyone else noticed that at certain times the Search function does not work at all...even New Posts and all you get is "The page cannot be found".

It also won't let me log-out either as I get "The page cannot be found".

And force reloading the page doesn't work....anyone else noticed this problem?

I'm heading back to google at the moment since the search feature appears toast at the moment...at least for me.

yes -- exact phrase matching is what needed most in these type of forums but not supported.....

In any case I use google to search this forum for exact phrases, if you use "site:" search function to search this site for exact phrases it will work.... In example If I want to search "adderal xr" (your search example) go to google, and type (exactly as below, with quotations as placed):

site:addforums.com "adderal xr"

with this search in google you can find the exact phrase (as you might already know, quotes in google searches exact phrase and "site:" searches the whole site you search...

Yes I know how google works, but we can't pick a specific subsection of the forum as we can with the official forum Advanced search.

To be clear...Google uses lots of really fancy things that guess at words that seem similar and catches spelling errors and sorts intelligently(in theory) in a manner that I believe is not just raw hits. (partly since numerous people have tried to highjack the results to get more traffic).

The forum search does have AND logic already built in...since that is what it does when you dump in the words into the search.

The exact quote or exact phrase matching in theory should be the easiest to code since it is just add a Stop value for " and then parsing out those as the search variables and could be added without have to mess with the AND logic.

But I guess as Andrew suggests...they just got a search engine from somewhere to use. (aka no one coded it) I would be surprised that a freeware aka Open Source search code should exist that has simple phrase, AND and OR structure logic.

The "OR" logic incidentally probably the hardest of the three to code since the combinations go up exponentially, but it might be not too long code and just take a lot longer...no clue...I dont' program Web site or Database stuff at all....and I'm not a programmer, but have had to do so painfully as an Engineer. (easier than the pain of trying to actually get a programmer to do it for us most times;)
