View Full Version : Morning exercise -- does it help with motivation?
I'm trying to work aerobic exercise into my daily routine, and I suspect that if I could get myself downstairs in the morning to work out, it would help. The problem is, of course, that morning my most sluggish time of the day. Can anyone who does a morning routine give me an inspiring pep talk? :D
Whoohooot!!!!
I've just put together three days in a row before lunch time.. of course this might be four with my memory but hey! I can't have everything I want all the time.. heh
I have started getting into the daily thang on the 22nd of February but this week I finally had motivation to get the twenty minutes in before lunch. If I could get it in before breakfast I'd be even happier about it. I like the way it makes me feel during the day when I get it in early.
I am keeping it unstructured for the most part and enjoying the time outside very much. I don't know why I can't make time for a simple walk but spitting wood and wrestling and running around with the dog seem to be sticking nicely. So I'll take what I can get.
It is certainly progressing. I have not missed a day in a week now and I think that make it 13 for 14 or close at any rate. I get discouraged or begin to over function if I keep records so I'm reluctant to retain too much other than the commitment to some friends that I'm going to get out and do it.
I took this approach with smoking a few years ago and it seems to have stayed put for good now. Don't touch the dials... I'm perfectly adjusted!... ehhe not!
I had been sporadically working up a sweat for a while before making the public commitment but after two weeks now of steady work I'm definitely feeling better.
The Dexedrine seems to keep my heart rate from falling like it should which is very discouraging. I've been fit before and one of the perks of that was to feel my heart pump slowly and strongly. I don't know why but this seems to be a big deal for me.. ehhe what a simple pleasure.. :D
Keep us posted krisp.. and take it easy.. Here's to lifestyles that work for us!
Cheers! Ian.
Good for you! And thanks for the pep talk ... that was just what I needed to hear.
Hey, Krisp - how is your routine going? Feel plugged in enough to motivate someone else to get with it?
I've been derailed the past few days because my youngest has a bad ear infection and has turned into a little tyrant. He's been so high-maintenance that I've had to spend a lot of time just holding him. (OTOH, this is an upper-body workout in itself -- the kid is heavy!) I'm hoping that by tomorrow he'll be feeling good enough to a.) let me sleep through the night and b.) let me exercise without throwing a hissyfit.
Yeah, I know ... I'm a great example! But I'll come back tomorrow and tell you how energized I feel after my workout, 'K?
The little terror went to sleep, the slightly bigger terror went to school, and I got to exercise today after all. I do feel much better now!
well done krisp.. < g > and the world is a better place.. :frog:
bnsforu2 03-23-04, 02:38 PM yes. motivation isnt permanent. but, it can be whipped into shape. just coming to this support forum once a day should cure that. :)
i need to switch to mornings myself.
but for now if i miss mornings i dont go to bed without a 2.5 mile 4.5mph 45 min run on our treadmill in the ugly garage.
Paul :)
bnsforu2 03-23-04, 02:40 PM thanks guys!
:) paul
good job all. I ride to work a lot in the am. It really does help to wake you up. Keep us posted Krisp.
Paul I do not know how you and Dan do the treadmill. I could never handle that.

Go Krisp! I'm still fighting this nasty cold - echinacea, licorice root and 2000mg Vitamin C. I guess I was due since I haven't really had one in 18 months. But I don't know why it decided to hit just when I was trying to get motivated to deal w/my life. Sometimes other people can see what we miss - any clues?
joanrdtobe 03-23-04, 06:51 PM Exercise seems to help getting started with the rest of the day -- not so scarey and dreadful....PLUS it makes me feel much more worthy of a good shower....:D
bekindtoedward 03-23-04, 07:41 PM exercise with another friend :), just make sure he isn't adhd too. you won't have to worry bout motivation problems. you'll be forced to wake up coz you don't wanna upset ur friend by not showing up
OK guys, here we go - TaeBo tomorrow... stay tuned ...
bnsforu2 03-25-04, 09:30 AM 2nd day 2.5 miles at 4mph treadmill. loud music, and a pic of a goal in front of me while on treadmill.
while on it, i want to get off the treadmill.
i force myself to stay the course.
after i m done,...i am glad i did.
:)
onto day 3 tomorrow.
I did it!!!!!!
I think I was afraid I wouldn't be able to make it through 'cuz I have a weak knee - I'm just feeling regretful now 'cuz I can only imagine the shape I'd be in if I had stayed with this from the last time I stopped.
Oh well. Live and learn. Abs and weights tomorrow. Promise.
Paul, I wish I had your strength and consistency. I'm really sort of mad that guys have more muscle weight to begin with than girls. A totally unfair advantage. Even that playing field!
And thanx, Ian. I think Linux rocks (based on what little I've picked up from my sysadmin friends).
Lafnalot 03-27-04, 01:58 AM Now see I have to excercise at night. For years I would try to force myself to do it during the day then an hour later I would be dying to go to sleep. I don't care what any expert tells me; after years and years and years of excercising ( I was anorexic and compulsive excercising gave me lots of practice) it makes me want to sleep. So now ( when i do it) i do it at night before I brush my teeth etc and I sleep like a baby........................hey maybe I should do that now??............................................. .........pffft that desire fizzled out fast
It's so so tough to get started.. It must have taken me a month or so to even get off the mark at all!
Then I made a decision to make a public commitment with a couple of guys on the forums here and so far so good.
My current learning is about how "not" to over do it!!!! My Achilles heel is always that I don't have a very good sense of what I'm feeling. Sounds odd maybe but that's the way it is. I never see it comming, I just end up with a stress injury or sick from depleted energy.
So now I get a few days off and see if I get stronger.. speaking of which.. it's high time for a snooze..
Well done!
cheers! Ian.
Lafnalot 03-27-04, 02:04 AM Im not to watch a scale ( at the doctors I turn around) theres so many things i have to watch for that I kinda got scared. I have such a hard time telling the difference between dedication and obsession and compulsion.........I never want to go back to that living nightmare of eating disorders BUt I miss how great i felt from balanced excercising ( yes I did have times in my life where I did something balanced)
but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and though distant, is close to us in spirit - this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.'
cool sig by the way. PAUL :)
Lafnalot 03-27-04, 10:26 PM Thanks Paul. von Goethe is timeless.....I adore him.
janesays 12-06-04, 02:59 PM When I excercise before or at sunrise it makes anything seem possible. I try to beat the sun. It definitley helps with motivation. The possibilities are infinite.
That might mean I'd have to go to bed at a decent time.
I love to get that early hit in the morning but I'm not good at going to bed. I did much better last week but it's an ongoing problem.
I agree totally that the earlier in the day get my run in the better.
Cheers! Ian
I find morning exercise is almost as successful as mid-day exercise is for me, moreso when I haven't slept the night before! It works well for me too, since I often have trouble sleeping, and after not sleeping the night before if I was to wait later in the day I would be way too tired to work out at all.
As a girl it's always nice to not have all the guys around at my college gym like they are in the evenings. There's one or two other girls in the weight section, and it's nice not to have to feel self-concious.
