I've already posted elsewhere that I got fired yesterday. What I did not include is this: We can't afford Cobra, so when I get a new job, no coverage for mental stuff, so I'm heading back to un-treated BPII, unless we can find some way around the pre-existing condition stuff.

Oh well. I've survived up till now, mostly without meds. Time to cowboy up again and deal with it.

Most drug companies have free med programs. You might be able to keep going until your benefits begin.

Here is a good post about it: http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19858

I'm in New York, so the programs are probably different, but you might want to see what sort of Medicaid & low cost health insurance programs your state provides. I didn't have insurance and I ended up in the hospital with meningitis and the hospital sent the Medicaid officers up to help me fill out the paperwork. It took a while to get the final approval, but they backdated the coverage to cover my entire illness. Now I just renew every year. I would be screwed without it-- I added up the full retail price of my meds (only adderall IR comes generic, and it is close to $2000 a month. There is no way in heck I could afford it without insurance).

You might also want to look into low-cost/free mental health clinics. I don't go to it, but there's one in my neighborhood that is free to anyone who lives in the upper section of manhattan. It is affiliated with Columbia and NY Presbyterian, so the staff is excellent.

I hope there's some way you can figure out how to get treatment. I am going to a psychiatrist now and taking meds and my life still sucks. Hang in there, I'm rooting for you.

Thanks to both of you. The problem is more the pre-existing condition... I can afford my meds for a month or two, but not the Cobra- it would take over half of our income each month. I will get new health coverage with a new job, but if I allow this policy to lapse, even for a day, the new policy will not cover on pre-existing conditions. We don't qualify for any kind of government help. My daughter can't even get financial aid for school. We are low income, just not quite low enough.

Do you still have the insurance for a week or two. If so maybe you can ask the doc to write you a few prescriptions and fill them at different pharmacies so you have enough to last a bit while you work it out. Also each ins. company is diff so you don't know how they will treat you. I think it's worth calling those drug companies and seeing what they can do. Also, counties might have health insurance and now that you are unemployed your income takes an obvious drop. Maybe you can get that.

I know with this condition the world can become filtered with bleakness. If you can try not to think about what will happen and just taker action.

Dang, that sucks. I'm on contract and my insurance runs out at the end of August if I don't re-up with my current school system, so I am hustling to find another job -- really good ins. on this one, and I don't want to go on meds only to go off.

I feel you. I ran up my credit cards buying meds when I didn't have insurance and I still don't have the stinkin' things paid off.

Also, there is a company called Care Entree that you can get a scrip card with for like ten bucks a month that will significantly reduce your med costs. I got like 50% off some of my meds (which were still to expensive, but still) ....

Here's a link to an article that I read on msn.com about this very subject. The health care system in this country is so messed up.

I am still covered until the end of May...so, if I get the State Hospital job I really really want, It starts on the 27Th. According to my sis, who works in different dept. of State gov, pre-existing conditions aren't an issue. Also, I found out that there is an option to back pay for cobra, so maybe it isn't as bad as I thought.
I can't go without meds anymore, as much as I would like to say that I could. I'm hearing voices that either do this sing song rhyming thing, or just repeat endlessly about how evil/bad/stupid...blah blah blah that i am. Depakote knocks it down to the usual whispering and muttering- which I thought happened to everyone. Guess not. Duh.

Yeah I know something about that. I don't get the old voices telling me to do stuff..it's more like what you mentioned and at its worst it's like either a damn radio or movie playing in my head that I can't stop or turn down the volume. It happens more at night.

I strongly urge you to call those drug company programs, explain your situation and see if you can get you some free medicine for a little bit. Also, I wonder if your doc can set you up with enough sample packs to carry you over a bit.

Hey Sponge...and everyone who responded, Thank you.

I'm calling PsyNP as soon as the clinic opens. She has Heaps of Depakote samples in one of her many stacks. (I love that about her...her office looks like a tornado hit it, very comfortable for an ADHD-er like me.) I'm sure she won't have a problem doling them out for a bit.
Oh, and Sponge, TV at night kinda drowns out the chatter when I'm trying to sleep... Documentary's seem to work the best, or anything on the Science Channel... or talk radio...anything without a plot to get involved in, but no music, because music means it's time to get up in my world.:)
