Will taking l-tyrosine with Strattera increase the effects of the Strattera?

Hi Mike,

Actually, if I've understood it correctly, taking L-Tyrosine, should lessen the side-effects of Strattera. That is, if accrediting the side-effects to too low availability of norepinephrine (as Strattera is a NRI - Norepinephrine Re-uptake Inhibitor).

Some say Strattera might deplete the available storage of Norepinephrine too quickly, hence given the side effects. L-Tyrosine is a precursor to norepinephrine and could as such help replenish the storage of norepinephrine.

For me this is a credible theory. Since taking L-Tyrosine, the jitters (anxiety/cyring) have somewhat subsided.

So in a way, yes, L-Tyrosine does make Strattera work better. But I don't know if it will increase the effects of Strattera in itself.

Take care,
Maria

How much do you think should be taken?

I take 2000mg a day (1000 am, 500 at lunch and 500 before going to bed) with strattera. It calms me (less anxious) and sleep better.

As with any such advice...its STRONGLY recommended that you speak with your medical professional before taking anything that might impact the effect of your prescribed medication.

Hi Bebeto,
This is quite a high dose, but I know it can be very effective for depression, anxiety and a little weight loss. Question: doesn't this high dose of L-Tyrosine give you dry mouth? It was the reason I had to cut back down to just 1 capsule a day...

Take care,
Maria

I undertand that 2000mg may be too high and anyone taking any supplement SHOULD CONSULT his/her doctor before doing so. Having said that, this dose is working for me and I increased the dose after trying lower doses for several weeks.

Maria,

The strattera itself gives me a mild dry mouth and I did not see any change after adding L-Tyrosine. L-tyrosine has helped me a lot with my anxiety and has given me a boost of energy. I did not loose any weight though (may be it is because I'm more active now).
