My doctor and I are looking into starting me on some Focalin because the Ritalin worked extremely well but would not last long at all, like it would work for a few days then my tolerance would catch up to it.
So when I told the doctor I wanted to try it he explained to me that there is not a generic form of Focalin (DEXMETHYLPHENIDATE) I will be calling some pharmacies soon, but I wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with getting the generic ever?
Thanks.
Yep, I believe Teva makes generic dexmethylphenidate - the FDA approved it a while ago. I don't know how available it is, but calling around to pharmacies sounds like a good idea. :)
I have had the generic made by Teva, and I found no difficulty in finding it available.
The only problem I had with it was the extremely high price for which it is sold.
For example, the cost for my prescription of the brand name Focalin was about $250.00, and the generic version made by Teva was $235.00.
Most generics are much more affordable than the innovator drugs which proceeded them, but not this one.
The way my Dr explained it to me was this. When the FDA allows for a generic drug to be made, they first pick one company that is allowed a 6 month period of time to make the first ever generic formulation of the medication. After the 6 month period of time, other companies are then approved to manufature the same generic based on those companies meeting the standards required for approval.
Well, it's been well over 6 months now, and for what ever reason the FDA has not approved anyone else to make a generic dexmethylphenidate yet (as far as I know).
I suspect that once another company is allowed to manufacture another generic of this medication that the price of the generics will become much more reasonable.

Lars, are you talking about the extended release type?
I just filled generic Teva 60 x 5mg. From what I see on my receipt it retailed for $58.99.

No, I was not talking about the extended release.
I was prescribed 200 of the 10mg immediate release tablets.
