View Full Version : Reputation System: Comments Left Behind

DeloresMelon 05-07-08, 04:26 PM out of curiosity is there a way to see ALL the feedback or the few we get on the CP is it?
(ps... I realize I'm a dork but I can't help think of Andrew like a famous person, Hollywood star or the like.... I try to get out more... really...) :o
The last five are the only comments you will see. A new comment will push another out the door.
(He is a star :)...although getting his autograph sometimes isn't always a good thing...just like any other staff member, a warning/infraction is priceless and can last forever :p... omg, I believe I have a great idea...Forum Hall of Fame :D)

Okay, got a question.
I understand about reporting posts that were abusive in nature (just plain rude or nasty)... but as far as reporting a person for abusing the rep system (I guess that would be something like leaving red points for the same person at least once a day), how do we know whether it's the same person leaving all those red points or if we've managed to upset a new person every day?
Since the rep comments are anonymous there's no way to know whether it's just one person abusing the system, meh?

I think maybe they're more interested in the abusive nature rather than chasing bandits all day.
Maybe you'd have less stress if you just ignored this particular feature. Yeah it's a pain in the butt having to decipher mini messages, and it's a pain when you don't know who left them, but you really seem to be having some major upset over this rep system.
Wouldn't you fare much better if you just ignored it? Turn it off? is that an option?
Lunacie 05-10-08, 10:56 AM I am way over the upset feelings, and I did turn off the rep comments, but don't shoot me for being curious and asking questions. It's very much a part of my nature to be curious. And once something catches my curiousity I want to know as much about it as possible.

You won't know its one person, but Admin can determine that. Admin can determine if an individual is abusing the reputation system. Also, as indicated in a previous post above, if you feel you're receiving abusive comments with the reputation points, Admin can look into that as well.
Also, PLEASE keep the following comments in mind:
The Reputation system is a broad, informal measure of how a community's members collectively value each other's input. It's hoped it can be used more in fun than in conflict. Re-read the post in question: perhaps there was a reasonable, objective reason why a fellow user felt the way he or she did about what you wrote.
However, we don't want the Reputation system to inhibit participation, and we know it can be abused by people with too much time on their hands. If you feel that you received a Reputation score unfairly, please send a link to the post in question to a forum administrator.

You can turn off the rep comments? Please tell me how. My feeling is that the rep system has changed the ambiance of this forum in a disappointing way. It encourages judgmental behavior and seems to make people afraid of what others will think of them--lest they will attract criticism. Granted comments can be positive, but who wants to feel evaluated all the time? I came here to escape that, that's my life out in the world at large--where I'm very likely to say the wrong thing and attract the negative judgments of others. I felt so free here, it was the only place where I really felt free to be my ADD-self, warts and all.

Thanks for your feedback, its much appreciated!
newfdog 05-18-08, 12:23 AM I could be wrong here, however, I don't feel most people stay awake trying to figure out who they are going to gig for a bad comment. If so. I would be in the red.....
.. nope..I lose sleep over too many other things, to let this kind of thing worry me.. ;):D
~boots~ 05-18-08, 02:21 AM things left like this for no reason, apart from trying to be funny I think are an abuse of the system.
Andrew, I'll report this one, as it serves no purpose whatsoever...

ADDAWAY 05-18-08, 02:41 AM I tend to agree with Tracy H on that one. It can leave a bad taste. :(
Like bad breath in the morning ... you don't know what caused it. (I suppose brushing, flossing and mouthwash might help ... but then there's the night things).

I sent you a PM with the information about turning off the rep comments.
I know people are judging me every time I post something here, just as I judge other posters by what they've written. But I really don't care to see those judgments when they're done in a cowardly anonymous manner. If someone really has an issue with something I've written, I'd much prefer it if they would send that message via a PM.
If it's a general "I disagree with you" similar to the Thank You messages that appear on the screen, then perhaps the system could be set up to show either "Thanks, I agree/that was useful" or "What the heck were you thinking?" notes at the bottom of the posts.
Andrew? Is that possible?
Assuming a person is not merely a troll I think there can be a special kind of beauty in getting a lot of negative feedback/comments(maybe I'm a masochist :) ). The mob gets it wrong as often as it gets it right in my opinion. Being right and living in objective reality is more important than merely convincing people your view is right.
On sites like Digg were you really get a up or down vote from everyone who reads your post and cares to vote it can be brutal. And the people there include a large percent of sociopaths.
ADDAWAY 05-18-08, 01:33 PM That's why thought-out comments are appropriate in rep. It let's us judge for ourselves.
If the rep. giver is not willing to Reply to our post or jot down a short, thought-out rep comment, then their choice should be Report the post or Thank the post or PM the poster (if accepting PMs). No other choices.
As ADDers, we need constructive criticism/ideas that we can discuss and assimilate if appropriate.
We do NOT need critical labels of the type we've been used to from other folks all our lives (difficult, crazy, egotistical, frustrating, irresponsible, lazy, stupid, undisciplined, etc.). At least those folks had the guts to put their byline on the labels (except for those anonymous employee evaluations)!
Shouldn't we expect at least as much, if not more, here in an ADDers' Forum?
I can't figure out how to turn it off either. I know we used to be able to turn it off. I'm really surprised that anybody running a forum would think the rep system is a good idea let alone a forum for people who are known to have more emotional issues than most.
I've seen people go crazy about the rep systems on technology boards. I'm amazed that a board run by people who have an understanding of ADHD and co-existing issues would add it here and think it would benefit us.
Well thought out??? This is a forum for people with ADHD and impulsivity is one of the main symptoms of ADHD. Many of the people coming here are new to the idea of ADHD and aren't quite managing it either. I think it's a bit much to expect well thought out comments here!! Oh, and let's not forget some of the people here also have co-existing learning disorders which can make written expression difficult!
When I get a red mark I'm usually happy that somebody hasn't called me a nasty name or told me to go do something naughty to myself...lol I guess being a cynical person like myself does pay off sometimes....lol

In that case (impulsive or LD members), Lunacie's idea makes sense to me Tara. We should be able to learn to handle criticism starting here on a friendly, supportive ADDF.

In the future, complaints like this will only be handled if sent to an Admin via Private Message. Gripes about specific rep points should NOT be posted on the public forums, as this can be construed as a form of bullying (and can lead to other subversive activities on the forums).
Bottom line: Don't post this stuff in public. Send it to an admin. Period.
newfdog 05-18-08, 02:59 PM I am probably going to get a few negative reps here, but what the Hell. This whole thread is a prime example of why we have problems in the schools and in the younger generation for that matter.
When I was younger and you screwed up, I mean really screwed up, you were disciplined and everything was not politically correct. Yes we got and still get our feelings hurt sometimes, but normally we get over it and get on with life. Now, every kid in school is special, no matter what, no wonder the world is so screwed up.
Maybe, I have gotten to the point of certain things roll off my back, I certainly have better things to worry about than a person on occasion giving me a bad rep. I have had my share, and in most cases I can see where the person was coming from...
Sorry for the mini hijack, but I felt it was relevant
Oh Yeah, Addawy, Bad breath can come from sleeping with your mouth open... Do ya snore? :p
Please know that Admin continues to look for ways to improve the overall operations of the ADD Forums (including form, features and functionality).
Before this turns into an Admin-witch hunt, I hope those of you that have neglected to contact admin via private message understand that despite our inability to respond to each public complaint thread (ADDers here are vocal, for sure), we do listen to what our members tell us, and we do appreciate the feedback.
We strive to communicate announcements of changes to our systems when appropriate...and should additional changes be made to the reputation system, we'll make every attempt to share the details with you.
