Before I'd always say I was in almost constant state of brain fog -- like that thick pea soup fog we get on "dead man's alley" where you can't see 10 ft in front of you. But today, on the phone and driving and not "hearing" a thing, I realized... It's not fog at all. It's cobwebs. Indiana Jones cobwebs. Surrounding you and grabbing you, putting a lot of pressure on your head, and very very sticky and stringy
Fog is, well, just fog. It can be kinda pleasant and dreamy. Cobwebs are irritating and you try to fight them off and the more you try to fight it, the more wrapped up you become. And the more you try to bat the cobwebs out of your eyes so you can see clearly, the stringier and stickier they become until you're paralyzed! And, of course, easy prey for the first spider that comes along.

Great comparison.. and yes, I've heard it described, both ways.

That does completely describe it!
When I have the zillion thoughts at once thing, I described it as trying to catch minnows in a pond. They are all swimming around really fast and there are a lot of them, just when I think I have caught one, it slips through my fingers. That is what grasping at a thought and trying to hold on to it feels like.

Exactly! BTW, I can catch baby trout in my hands but not minnows... Minnows are way too elusive -- need a net for them.

Mmmm... trout.
No fair! Now I'm REALLY hungry. *thinking I need to go get some trout and blacken it for dinner*
Mmm, blackened trout. Or do I want it in lemon and butter? Or BBQ'd? Decisions. I really hate you right now! ;)

The cobweb analogy is good but I still like the fog analogy. I don't see fog as pleasant and dreamy. Fog is blinding and very disorienting. It's hard to see into the distance and figure where to go when it's foggy.
