View Full Version : Can ADHD meds worsen depression???
NickL30 05-12-08, 10:58 PM I notice that I feel very depressed & anxious late in the day when I take Vyanase. Felt the same way after taking Adderall. It is like this irritable, paranoid depression.
Presently I am on 60MG of Vyanase, 80MG of Prozac, 900MG of Neurontin. I take the Prozac late in the day to help with the depression. I have been taking Vyanase for 2 weeks and don't take any over the weekend. Before the vyanase, I felt in a constant state of low - mild hypomania likely from the Prozac.
I have been taking Prozac for over a year and originally diagnosed with depression & anxiety. I felt great after starting the Prozac back then that I tried to continue the feeling by taking 5HTP and variations of MDMA occasionally. I believe that I had the 'manic side of ADHD'. When I take an ADHD med like Adderall or Vyanase it helps only for like 3 hours then I just feel tired, depressed, & anxious the rest of the day.
ADDAWAY 05-12-08, 11:02 PM Any thoughts about trying Lexapro instead of Prozac ... Vyvanse 30mg + Lexapro 20 mg + 1 Deplin/day. Doing better!

The answer is YES. I was having the same problem and my doctor made me get off all stims and it didnt happen anymore. It's tough because on the one hand, its very difficult to function without without stims, but at the same time they can cause "crashes" later in the day that cause people who are predisposed to be more depressed than they would be withut them. I can tell you one thing, you MUST NOT take any more of that MDMA(exstacy) you were talking about. Noone knows what is in that stuff and I'm pretty sure it's a short term fix with long term consequences. Good luck, my friend.
scarygreengiant 05-13-08, 09:07 AM Yes they can according to my psychiatrist.
Taking 5HTP with Prozac might not be a good idea. The two both raise serotonin levels.

I know what's in MDMA: MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine). Now as to what's in pills sold as MDMA, X, etc...
MDMA, like amphetamine (Adderall, Dexedrine), is a phenethyamine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenethylamine#Substitution_table). But yeah, don't take it.

A dopaminergic mechanism is involved in the 'anxiogenic-like' response induced by chronic amphetamine treatment: a behavioral and neurochemical study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of chronic d-amphetamine (AMPH) treatment (2 mg/kg i.p., for 9 consecutive days) on behavioral and neurochemical responses to a subsequent exposure - 4 days after the last AMPH injection--to the elevated plus-maze (EPM), as well as to determine the involvement of a dopaminergic mechanism in that influence. Results showed that chronic AMPH treatment induced an 'anxiogenic-like' response when animals were evaluated in the EPM test. Pretreatment with either haloperidol (HAL, 1 mg/kg i.p., 20 min prior to each injection) or SCH-23390 (0.1 mg/kg i.p., 10 min prior to each injection) completely abolished the chronic AMPH-induced 'anxiogenic-like' effect displayed in the EPM test. However, sulpiride pretreatment (60 mg/kg i.p., 10 min prior to each AMPH injection) did not modify such effect. In addition, rats treated with AMPH and subsequently exposed to the EPM, showed a decrease in the maximal GABA-stimulated chloride uptake in cortical microsacs. HAL pretreatment restored the maximal chloride uptake induced by chronic AMPH. Altogether, these results suggest that: (1) previous exposure to chronic AMPH treatment induces an increased emotional response following a conflict situation, (2) dopamine D(1) receptors are mainly involved in chronic AMPH-induced changes in the behavior displayed in EPM test, and (3) an interaction between GABAergic and dopaminergic mechanisms may be implicated in neurochemical and behavioral changes induced by chronic AMPH treatment.

That suggest d-amphetamine the primary metabolite of Vyanase can increase anxiety.

Calcium channel antagonists suppress cross-tolerance to the anxiogenic effects of D-amphetamine and nicotine in the mouse elevated plus maze test.

The purpose of the current experiments was to examine the anxiety-related effects of repeated amphetamine and nicotine administration using the mouse elevated plus maze (EPM). d-amphetamine was administered daily for 8 days (2 mg/kg, i.p.). On the 9th day, mice were challenged with amphetamine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or nicotine (0.1 mg/kg, s.c.), and were tested 30 min after this last injection. Additionally, a distinct group of mice was pretreated with nicotine (0.1 mg/kg, s.c., 6 days). These mice were subjected to nicotine (0.1 mg/kg, s.c.) or amphetamine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) challenge on the seventh day to see if full crossover effects developed after the pretreatment of both psychostimulant drugs. Moreover, the L-type voltage-dependent calcium channel antagonists nimodipine (5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.), flunarizine (5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.), verapamil (5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.) and diltiazem (5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.) were injected prior to each injection of chronic d-amphetamine or nicotine. We observed cross-tolerance to the anxiogenic effects of d-amphetamine and nicotine that was blunted by a pretreatment with calcium channel blockers. Overall our findings imply that similar neural calcium-dependent mechanisms are involved in the anxiety-related responses to chronic amphetamine and nicotine injections. As anxiety seems to be an important factor for the development of psychostimulant dependence, the L-type VDCC antagonists can offer an interesting approach for the pharmacotherapy of addiction, including amphetamine and/or nicotine dependence.

Calcium channel blockers can block the anxiogenic effects of d-amphetamine.
Jaimespace 05-17-08, 12:45 PM When I was on concerta I told my psychiatrist that I feel great during the day, but during the end of the day I get really down, and depressed. He said that concerta is used as an anti-depresent when other anti-depresents don't work on some people.

People on stimulants often feel low at the end of the day when the blood level of the drugs are low. Some doctors prescribe a small immediate release dose of stimulant med at the end of the day to help avoid the crash.

...I'm on a calcium blocker verapamil, 90 mlgrms adderrall and valium (in case of anxiety)
lately I dont feel "good"
...I don't know why...Its prolly loosing my job.
I'll be damnned if I go on an anti depressant.
.....lexipro gave me a new voice in my head.....that said.
"kill yourself. don't relapse, don't take more drugs....just die, you're wasted"
it was a mean voice.
...I'll never take anti depressants again.
Without them the world becomes a dark place... but I'm tolerant and dependent on them now.
hmmm.

Cool. I was thinking about making a thread to see what kind of effects people might be noticeing from the combined use of stimulants and calcium channel blockers.
