View Full Version : Remembering beyond the sticky note, pda, etc.
sharon1175 05-14-08, 05:14 PM So what do you do to hold on to memories? I mean remembering to do something. I actually had to write out a shopping list to buy ingredients for tacos. Not that I don't know what goes into them, but because I needed this check list to make sure I didn't walk out the door without the shells!
I can be reminded of something, then forget 10 minutes later when something else comes up. I feel like I'm lost in my own little world.
I'm looking into a pda or something that will remind me of certain things not just once, but multiple times throughout the day. If I set my phone to tell me to stop at the market on the way home an hour before I leave work, I am likely to forget by the time I do leave. I need a snooze button!
I have a pocket pc, I'm now terrified of losing it! you can set tons of reminders, have addresses, email, phone, all in one thing...but I've misplaced it a few times, which really sucks.
DeloresMelon 05-15-08, 06:45 AM I too write out my shopping list including everything. Otherwise I'd forget. Period. I read somewhere that in order to remember to do something, visualize yourself doing it. That cements it in memory. Years ago if I had to remember something in the morning, as I was laying in bed, I'd say over and over what I had to do. I probably visualized it too. I "think" it worked well enough.
I'm personally a paper and pencil person. I tried a planner/organizer, but being an avid over spender I bought big and it's WAY too detailed.
However, I noticed I had learned to use a monthly calender that I nailed to the wall in my kitchen. Mind you, it can't be just any wall calender and I buy this calender specifically each year. I've tried a different one, only to give it to my mom and reorder the right one. Weird, but it works. I also had gotten in the habit of carrying a wire bound calender.
I've since decided the planner may actually work, but I need a smaller size (since I was carrying the wire bound one) but not as detailed as the large one (weekly instead of a daily). I only keep a weekly calender, monthly calender mostly for reference, and address information and lots of notepaper.
I also keep a small notebook in my car organizer, (multi compartment thingy that sits, rather takes up, the front passenger seat). That way when I'm out and need to jot something down quickly, I use that, and just put the page in my pocket or my purse, hopefully to transfer it to my planner.
I've transferred all my essential info to the planner and and am getting into the habit of keeping it with me, so I'll begin to automatically use it.
Good intentions, but is there enough motivation to follow through??? We'll see.
I love the idea of the PDA's, but I've tried them in the very long ago past, and don't think I'd use them. I really prefer writing things down and have this weird fetish for pencils. ..... LOL You should see my collection.
I also have gotten in the habit of using a canvas tote bag. It has little pockets all around it that I keep little stuff in like my coupon holder. If I'm going to the library the next morning, the books go in the tote. Netflix movies need to be mailed back, into the tote. Mail needs to get into the house, into the tote.
It doesn't leave the car when I'm out so it's not like I'm committing any fashion faux pas, but it is handy.

Haha, that's familiar. I myself have to avoid the SuperWalMart gravity field.
I've got a PDA (original palm) that I almost never use. It's bigger than my wallet, which is just too big for me. I wish it was watch-sized. I program my cellphone with reminder alarms, but sometimes I forget to do this. Sticky notes everywhere, even the dash of my car. I have a fold-out planner so I can see the whole month at a glance. I highlight it, use black and red pens. When I remember to look at it, it helps. The trick is forming that habit.
I also have a large magnet calendar encrusted with all sorts of colorful and interesting thingies. I use a small digital timer to pace myself. Also there's those wrist reminders that you write on (if you don't care whether you look dorky- and I don't- I dare somebody to say something, I'll shoot 'em with my laser eyes) those are good when your SO asks you to bring home the milk.
mine's the 6700 pocket pc, it's my phone also, and just a little bigger than my last phone. if I had 2 gadgets I'd lose one for sure ... helps that its my phone too

I don't know if it's my ADHD or some kind of rebellious nature, but I can't seem to use those properly. The pages are waaaaay too detailed or not detailed enough.
Monthly caldeners
I do much better with a simple month-to-month kind of situation. When I can see the overall month, combined with highlighting appointment days, I can organize myself better. I keep a smaller one, and I find writing info much better.
Keeping a notebook
So I can write stuff down right there! Other wise, it's gone. And don't think you'll remember, because you almost never will.
Highlighters
My calender is meaningless unless I have colour added to it. It helps me to trigger my memory that so and so day is important.
I also like the tips from "ADD friendly ways to organize." I think their advice was to keep the to do list to less than four items and to use active words.
Pauligirl 05-19-08, 12:33 PM Lists, lists, lists! I've come to realize that it's just the way it's going to be for me to remember anything. I also use a simple organizer so I can keep track of appointments, etc... I've considered using a PDA, but I don't think I'd use it. Seems easier for me to be able to write things in a planner. For recurring bills I'm now on automatic withdrawl.
I'm considering getting a watch with an alarm feature so I'll remember that I need to get something done or need to be somewhere. Also would use it as a reminder that I need to stay on track when trying to complete particular tasks.:)
sharon1175 05-19-08, 03:27 PM For bill paying, I live by my pocket calendar. Nothing fancy, but it shows the whole month... not much different than a wall calendar and no bigger than my check book.
Every pay day, I open the calendar and check off what is paid and take note of what needs to be paid. I estimate my money coming in so I know what I have to pay right away.
Every week I do this so nothing is late... unless I forget to mail it, which is why I do online bill pay wherever possible. Anything that needs to be mailed usually sits for a while until I "feel like" putting it in an envelope and sending it.
At Heart 05-21-08, 10:26 AM I just got an iphone in the hopes that once I figure out how to use it - it will help keep me organized...
