View Full Version : Urinary Tract Infections?

Hi, I am a relatively new user of Adderall (I was on Adderall XR for 2 months, now on regular adderall 2x a day for almost a month) and so far Ive experienced TWO urinary tract infections.

I do not normally get UTI's, and from what Ive read, it seems to be a side effect of the Adderall.

I have my Dr apt next week, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and what did you end up having to do? Change your meds? Take another med all the time to prevent? Or just live with them?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Alissa, welcome to the forums!

How much water are you drinking? Adderall dehydrates you...dehydration can cause UTIs...especially in women.

Here's a link to a similar thread, you might find something useful in here as well :)

My non-PhD, experience-based advice: drink water like it's going outta style, and take cranberry supplements at night (they help prevent UTIs by acidifying your "environment", and if you take at night, shouldn't affect your add meds).

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do drink PLENTY of water - I do get really thirsty while on Adderall. I would say I drink about 60-70 oz of water a day. I will look into getting some cranberry supplements, and will talk to my doctor when I go next week.

the dehydration leading to uti makes sense.

I've noticed that if I do not drink enough water at the time I take the medicine - I need to take it with at least 8oz of water - when I do urinate, I feel like I have a UTI. It feels like I have keep peeing, but I do not have an infection. That may sound odd, but I've noticed it frequently.

Adderall can also cause "urinary hesitancy," I've read, and I've experienced some of it. It's like I pee, then wait, then pee just a little more (I know, TMI for any dudes who stumble across this), but that may be what you're experiencing, too. It's not the same as a UTI, but very similar. The difference is that (for me) a UTI would take off on me and get worse and worse and worse over a period of hours. This never does. It's exactly the same, just means I spend more time in the bathroom than usual.

BTW, other drugs cause this, too, like antihistamines, etc. So if you're taking any of those, it may just be that the effects are enhanced.

No, Im sure mine is a UTI because of the pain and burning, even when not urinating. I had to go on 1000mg/day of antibiotics to get rid of it last time, which wasnt fun.

I dont think its any other meds I take - I only take birth control, and Ive been on that for 7 years!

:( Hope my doc can fix this cuz Adderall seems to be a miracle for me.

... doc should be able to help. Another thing... if you drink juices high in sugar.. or carbonated beverages, it tends to contribute to UTI's.. and will make the burning more intense.

unsweetened cranberry juice is wonderful for helping clear up UTI's..as are fresh cranberry's

Also.. during infections... take showers, instead of tub baths.. as sitting in the warm water..tends to worsen the infection.
