So far its my 6th day taking my 20mg XR pill and its been a success everyday. No euphoria, good concentration, better driving now (not a danger driving anymore thank god), and much increased socialization skills.

What I am scared of, is once I hit the tolerance level and will barely feel the effects of 20mg XR. I know you can ask the doc to up a dose, but I really do not wish to do that UNLESS I really must. I need adderall for basically almost everyday so far until in the end of June. My situation: For my job, I really need to focused and concentrated so it is vital I take my XR that day. I don't work on the weekends, but I don't want to feel hazey on a Saturday where my concentration is necessary for socializing with my friends and so I actually can think of something to say with them.

What days do you guys/gals find it best to take a break of ur dose? How long? Do you even take a break at all and supplement ur dose with magnesium to keep the tolerance level low?

I wouldn't mind taking magnesium to slow my tolerance, but I have no idea if it causes damage to your brain which is why I am kind of scared of it. Suggestions appreciated.

If you are only taking 20mg a day and it is working you have a lot of room to make dosage adjustments down the road. I've been taking meds for ADHD for quite a few years and one thing I discovered is taking my meds everyday works best. Another is that over time dosage adjustments such as amount taken, frequency, type- IR/XR, and even a different type for awhile can be beneficial.

The key is to focus on how it is helping you. Or how it is not helping as well as it once was. COMMUNICATE this with your doctor. If it is working good throw this tolerance stuff out the window and go on with your life. Good luck my friend.

I'd be skeptical of the magnesium idea. Mg would certainly increase efficacy, but through increased absorption (i.e. a higher dose) because of the antacid effect, which would only serve to increase tolerance.

Regarding drug "holidays", take them on weekends or other days off. Plan a day of doing nothing; anything you do accomplish then becomes a bonus.

I would not worry too much about tolerance. I've been taking Adderall, and previously Dexedrine, for many years. I take very few days off and in the decade+ since I started my dose has gone up by a factor of 2 to 2.5 or so. No big deal.

I'm not a doctor but I (personally) try to take at least a one day break from adderall once a week. Taking breaks from it has been a majot factor that has allowed me to stay on the medication. I usually do it on the weekend or whatever day I can slumber without contempt. The good thing about adderall is that one does not have to build up a level over time to gain full benefit. It's almost like a switch that can be turned on and off, but not exactly so. Sometimes after a long period of being on it, I can have some anziety that fortunately seems to last a only a day or two. I have inattentive type add and I take 15mg xr twice daily. I split the last dose four-six hours apart which has worked very well for me. While tolerance to some degree (I think) is well documented to be inevitable, I have learned (for myself at least) that such tolerances fades upon re-continuance after taking a fair vacation off the medication. It's seems everyone is different however and a large part of the road on adderall is learning how you persoanally respond to the medication. I've been on my current dosage for over a year now and so far I've not had tolerance issues that were not remedied with a break from the drug.
