My son was switched today from 25mg Strattera which he's taken for 8 mo. (I thought it had been longer) to Adderall XR 10mg. He tried Adderall XR prior to Strattera, 5mg & it worked ok, but didn't seem strong enough. Since Strattera is in the class of antidepressants, rather than stimulants, has anyone noticed any withdrawal when coming off of Strattera? My son told me yesterday that every morning after he takes the Strattera, within an hour his stomach hurts, for about 1 1/2 hrs, then goes away. He says that it does this every mrning, even though he just told me yesterday. His doc says this is common. But he didn't mention anything else, especially withdrawal symptoms.

Hopefully he'll have none & this transition will be smooth!

Like other drugs of it's class, you shouldn't stop taking Strattera suddenly, unless serious side effects occur. From what I've read and heard, Strattera is pretty good when it comes to discontinuation. A week at a lower dose would probably do it - I'd GUESS. I know from personal experience when I suddenly stopped taking a similar drug (one that works on norepinepherine too) I was a bit irritable for a couple of days but that was all the side effect I had. The irritibility is not as bad when I take a week or two to ween myself off them - of course I am simply more irritable when not taking the anti-depressant! If his stomach is hurting, that sounds like a reasonable reason to stop quickly. Ask your Doctor, or course!
Good luck
Greg

I had taken Zoloft for migraine prevention for a short time, which in the end didn't work. 25mg I think. Knowing the trend on these, I cut the dose in 1/2 & wasn't too bad, did that for a few weeks, then tried a couple 1/4's but the pills didn't cut very well so went back to 1/2 every other day. Did fine. Eventually quit & felt a complete mental fog for a few weeks while getting these "zaps" - the WEIRDEST THING! Finally after 4-6 weeks of zaps, they finally went away. I can only hope for none of that for my son! But his doc didn't say anything about taking a reduced dosage... He's not on a very high dose. I'm guessing this med hasn't been out on the market too long to know all the ins & outs of side effects, long term use & all that. Thanks!

I just changed from Adderall XR to Strattera. I couldn't handle the Adderall. I am seventeen, how old is your son?
