View Full Version : ADD Forums Outage
Many of you may have noticed that the ADD Forums was unavailable through much of Saturday Night through Sunday evening.
An explosion and resulting fire in one of the data centers we rely on caused the outage. Thankfully there were no injuries. Our data was never in danger (our systems were actually located in another data center), but it took us a while for our forums to be generally available again.
Thanks to everyone for your patience during this unforeseen event!
I'm glad to hear noone was hurt! Thanks for updating us.
Take care,
Emmie
FrazzleDazzle 06-01-08, 10:00 PM Whew, I thought it was just me. Glad all is well, Andrew, figured something unforseen happened, you always let us know of planned outages.
I sat here with nuttin ta do.........

Thank you, Andrew... Wow, I thought I messed up my computer, again:rolleyes:! I'm glad, too, that no one was hurt..
Thank you for letting us know, Andrew.
I agree.. Thanks! I too thought I'd done something to my computer, but all other sites were coming up fine.
Definitely glad that noone was hurt.

actually, I thought it was a very very clever way to suspend me..
hehehe
:D:D
I'm glad all's well now
Hmm the most explosive thing in such a center would be batteries. If a recharging circuit fails and a lead/acid battery over charges it can produce hydrogen and a spark from a relay and its game over.
well I am glad everyone was ok!
I was worried, I've come to really need this forum, I'm glad things are fine and nobody got hurt!
Pray4Him 06-02-08, 07:44 AM LOL I thought I had a virus. I would click on the link to the forum and some photography site would come up LOL
Very happy everything is ok now!
Thanks

A high currant arc fault in a motor starter, or circuit breaker could do the trick as well.
Thanks for the update Andrew. Very glad to hear no one was hurt, and no damage to ADDF.:)
glad no one was hurt.
thanks for posting all this, I was wondering what happened... as you seemed too professional to go down like that with no warning and for such a lenght of time that took 'website maintenance' definitely out of the question..
hope you recover from any damage.

Tracy, it's always all about you. :p
AnalogDog 06-02-08, 09:28 PM Oh, man. Glad to hear no one was hurt. But is there any real news about it? I mean a newspaper report or something.
I was really missing you guys over the weekend, and the DW and I were in the middle of a pretty bad argument. It would have been nice to vent.
LOL I thought I had a virus.I never think of that. :p
Thank you for letting everyone know.
I sat home all weekend with my daughter who is sick. I was checking the site every 20 minutes or so. I thought something was wrong with my computer too--well come to find out I had 44 programs infected with spy ware or 44 spy ware programs.. (I don't really know how that works just that they are gone now)-- so my computer did have some problems too.
I mean a newspaper report or something.
The hold up is the full translation of the North Korean paper to English. Moral of the story is don't hire Dr Evil to do IT consultant work for you. :)
I hardly think the following article requires translation: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=data_center&articleId=9092158&taxonomyId=52&intsrc=kc_top
Maurice 06-02-08, 10:13 PM I totally flipped out over this deal. I did not even try going any place else. I tried Saturday and Sunday. On Monday when my ISP opened I called, I do not even know how many times trying to get my computer "fixed." I was on and off the phone with those people from 17:15 untill 19:10!!! The last poor guy was off at 19:00, but he stayed and helped me with my computer. After I hung up for the last time, I finally tried going to a different site, and everything else worked. It was a very frustating almost 2 hours, all for nothing!
"Firefighters told data center workers to turn off all the power, according Planet spokeswoman Yvonne Donaldson. That meant the servers, even though they weren't damaged, were offline."
In other words it was not the random failure of transformer but a government order that shut it all down.

Sounds like another conspiracy theory in the works. Pretty soon someone will start the rumor that Antarctic Terrorists blew up the transformer...to protest global warming.

Curls up in the corner...and snoozes..while the conspiracy flutters through once more. ;)
