View Full Version : Starting Adderall
Teacherin 06-09-08, 12:39 PM Hello!
I'm pretty excited about the results so far. Doc rx'd 10 mg IR once a day. That left me extremely drowsy and tired in the afternoon. Then he said try 10 mg twice a day, that worked ok for a while, but then I realized I wasn't focusing as good, it was like I wasn't taking anything. Now I am on 20 mg in the AM, and he rx'd it twice a day. I just tried 20 mg once, and I find it amazing! It gets rid of a lot of my anxiety problems and depression problems as well. I don't think I will take it twice a day at this point. He is flexible with me trying out what works for me.
The interesting thing was each of the "first days" of any of the changes in the rx I was extremely tired, yawning continuously, could have slept all day, emotionless, with no racing thoughts. The next day I felt like my "potential self". Stick it out! It may end up working for you!
I just wanted to post this for others because I was searching for info when I started taking it, and it's helpful to read other people's experiences!
:)

Teacherin, what exactly do you mean by this statement? Are you saying that everyday while you were trialing the medication adderall xr that you were tired, yawning, etc..( side-effects) until you got the dosage right and then all of the sudden with the right dose you had success?
and your advice would be to be patient while trialing the med, it's all about the dosage , correct?
Teacherin 06-09-08, 02:11 PM Adderall IR (regular not extended release, I think it's also generic)
Yes... It was really weird, and didn't make any sense.
Day 1 of adderall ever: 5 mg once a day. Felt like I was going to pass out. I called the pharmacist to see if I could have coffee, because on the sheet it says don't drink coffee. She said "you're tired? Adderall is a stimulant!" "I wouldn't take coffee if I were you"
Day 2: 10 mg once a day. Out of my mind with thirst, yawning continuosly but not tired at all. A little shaky. Came home and went crazy organizing the entire house (speedy)
Took that dose for a week or two, ended up crashing in the afternoon about 3 ish. Doc said take two 10 mg. Tried that for a week, but I felt like I wasn't taking anything at all, felt emotionless, drained, lethargic again.
Started 20 mg. once a day three days ago (give or take). I was a zoned out tired mess! Yawning, soooo tired. Could barely function. Costco was very hard to deal with.
Today, and yesterday with 20 mg once a day, I feel GREAT!
No anxiety, energized but not speedy, Focused, happy...
I don't know. I took Wellbutrin before for a while and I had the same problem with being extremely uselessly tired. I think it's just my body's response to the drugs.
Good luck
hollywood 06-09-08, 02:25 PM yeah I've had the same response as well. I think it just takes the body adequate time to adjust and when it does you get the payoff of the medication working well. Wellbutrin made me really tired as well in the beginning but after a few months that goes away. I'm trialing adderall, I feel a bit tired as well, but I think it's going to work for me after my body adjusts-
I trialed it before a year and a half ago and I was tired for two weeks and then one day it was like a miracle-
Teacherin 06-09-08, 02:27 PM Good luck!
P.S. I drank the coffee anyway...
Eating sugary foods also helps. At times I felt like it was a blood sugar thing. I don't have problems with that, but I assume that's how it would feel.
hollywood 06-09-08, 02:59 PM teacherin,
Thanks, I hope that I'll have a positive story here shortly . I'm interested if you continued the wellbutrin? Did the sedating side effect subside after awhile?
Note: since Adderall is a stimulant.. drink more water than you normally would during the day... especially around the time your meds are wearing off. It helps with that rebound feeling.
Most have had to double their water intake after being prescribed Adderall.

No, it's a dehydration thing. What you're describing sounds like a stimulant crash/rebound (i.e. you don't eat, you don't drink water, your body crashes and thus you feel tired).
The last thing you should do while on Adderall is take another stimulant (i.e. caffeine) and eat lots of sugar.
Try this - eat small healthy things like granola bars. Drink water or electrolyte liquid (i.e. Gatorade), not soda, not coffee. It should improve your symptoms;)
ALSO - make sure you're getting enough sleep. Using Adderall to 'prop yourself up' from sleep deprivation will also result in a very hard crash/rebound.
