blueyeyore 06-11-08, 06:13 PM I got fired today. I guess I've always been on the verge of getting fired from every job I've had; I would just quit before they had a chance to fire me.
The funny thing is...I'm more amused/peeved than I am worried about finding another job. I couldn't even gather my personal belongings...they're going to mail them to me.
I was already looking for another job anyway
still... blah @ accountability and being on time!!
sloppitty-sue 06-11-08, 07:21 PM I know it still can feel humbling (i.e., humiliating) at times. But when one door closes, another one opens. But when occasionally we take too long closing that first door, sometimes we get a little help. :o
I share your whatever... attitude about job termination though. With the way this world runs, I can't help feeling that It's Not Us - It's Them. Ya know?
Just woke up from a nap, so sorry if this is short & choppy. Please know I'm here for ya, girl!
Luv,
Sue
blueyeyore 06-11-08, 07:34 PM I managed to make it past the year mark at this job and honesty they're a great company to work for...benefits wise n all, but once my boss got her master's degree she became a total witch... she's been after me for a while now and when we switch from second shift to first, I had a LITTLE trouble adjusting to the getting up at 6am opposed to getting up at 11am...i was a late...chronically late. *shrugs*
Now I'm wondering how I am supposed to explain this in an interview lol
Retromancer 06-11-08, 09:18 PM One consolation: you are quite possibly eligible for unemployment benefits.
Congratulations!
blueyeyore 06-11-08, 09:19 PM lol...i thought about that
but seeing as I'm getting 2 weeks of termination pay and all my vacation pay...I'm not sure if that means I won't get unemployment or what *shrugs*

Retromancer 06-11-08, 09:32 PM Doesn't matter. If you have worked at that job for over a year and have been asked not to return then you are eligible for unemployment. Period. You've earned it...

~boots~ 06-11-08, 11:04 PM hugs B...I hope you find something soon..xx
yeah... me too.. good luck on the job hunt.. :)
meadd823 06-12-08, 12:15 AM Unemployment may be worth a try you will not be any worse off than if you do not try = what is the worst they can do say no ?
dyingInside 06-12-08, 01:30 AM Wow, sorry to hear your misfortune but glad to hear you are handling it so well. Good luck finding another, better position.

You mention your boss being a witch and being after you for a while - well, I had a similar experience. And very fortunately for me, there was another victim and witness to her madness. This person - who was an older professional with lots of experience in her field and well-respected - went to the top boss and laid what was going on right there on the table. She was "quitting" but just wanted to say that she's never worked with such a horrible person in her life.
They begged her not to quit and gave her another - BETTER - job in another department. I was transferred to another dept. too, but the damage was done and I eventually left.
You may find comfort on a website (which you can Google) called "Workplace Bullying." I know I did.

DotwithADD 06-12-08, 02:40 AM Bless your heart, blueyeyore... I've been there... I'm sure most of us have.. It does sound to me like your boss is bullying you. I'll bet she made it worse on you... Did she change your shift??? if so, she thought you might have a problem getting there at 6 a.m. - sheesh, that's a big change... sounds like she did that on purpose (if she DID change your shift) so she'd have a reason to fire you. I know about being chronically late... but you don't have to tell anyone (during interviews) that, in fact you shouldn't of course. And, I hope you know that you shouldn't reveal your "ADD" either! Also, do you have a state vocational rehabilation where you live? Ours includes people with learning disabilities - ALL kinds of disabilities, or should I say... DIFFERENCES OF ABILITIES...right??
Take care, and you might even contact the ADA (http://www.ada.gov/) (American's with Disabilities ACT) and report it ASAP! Don't let that "witch" get away with it..
Good luck... I wish you the best!
kilted_scotsman 06-12-08, 03:28 AM Heart goes out to you, particularly because you said the job had good benefits and it started at 11am. That would be a lifesaver for me too. Over here we have a thing called "constructive dismissal" which means that companies/bosses can't pick on one person and harass them to make them leave or build a case to fire them.
Workplace bullying is also illegal and the tribunals take a VERY dim view of it, especially if there's any hint of discrimination due to sexual orientation, race or medical condition.
If you lived in the UK my advice would be to join a union n your next job, though varable in quality unions or the Citizens Advice Bureau are pretty much the only ways for employees to access free advice on employment law.
I'd lok around for another late starting job, or try to find a place that runs flexitime where you can clock in and out.

I googled it... http://www.lni.wa.gov/Safety/Research/Files/Bullying.pdf (http://www.lni.wa.gov/Safety/Research/Files/Bullying.pdf) - this link requires Adobe Acrobat reader (which, if you don't have it already, it is free to download). Wow, did I ever see a situation that fits situation, blueyeyore. Thank you, sloppitty-sue and kilted scotsman (constructive dismissal" which means that companies/bosses can't pick on one person and harass them to make them leave or build a case to fire them.). I'm wondering if that's what happened to me when I worked at a local community college, after a new director was hired (in the dept. I was working in), changed the job description so I would no longer be qualified for the job that I had been working at for 1-1/2 years. She made it real hard... expecting me to vacuum and clean (not in the job description, although she may have added that, I don't know). That was in 1997.
blueyeyore 06-13-08, 03:26 PM Thank you everyone for your support. I went to see my pdoc today and it kind of shocked him that I had been fired because I had been showing improvement over the past several weeks, but I guess the damage had already been done.
This is something I see happen in this department alot in the past year. When a supervisor is looking to get into a new position or about to leave the department, they feel the need to shake the place up a little bit. I guess I just happened to be the person cut this time around.
As far as the schedule change, it was not just me, it was an entire shift elimination; therefore if we wanted to keep our jobs we went to first shift. There were only about 16 of us anyway on the second shift.
I was two weeks away from having a different supervisor too...so close lol
Anyway thanks again everyone for all your support and kind words.
DotwithADD 06-13-08, 11:26 PM I can't remember if I've already mentioned this, but three times (in three different jobs, that is), I had been let go after a new supervisor stepped in... it does happen... But, instead of being angry, I TRY to be thankful they didn't keep me there and make it h*ll for me... which is what would happen. Those obviously weren't my kind of jobs... so, now that I've been going back to college and when I get my degree, I hope to get the right situational job for my abilities.
