View Full Version : Inattentive acting hyperactive on the first day after a short med holiday?

I sorta noticed what seems to be a correlation between things and wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this at all... I'm ADHD-inattentive type, and I'm on 20mg of Adderall XR with 5mg of Ritalin in the evening (but I only take the Ritalin on an as needed basis) .

I usually don't take my medications over the weekend unless I'm doing something that really requires that I need to focus... Something I've noticed, however, is that if I take a day or two off, the next time I take my medication, like on a Monday... I'm totally hyper and off the wall. Then, on Tuesday and the rest of the week, I'm totally normal and can focus fine.

I hadn't made the correlation between not taking them over the weekend and being hyper on Monday until today because I didn't take my meds yesterday because I ran out and needed to get more and then when I took one today, I noticed that I feel like I normally feel on a Monday when I haven't taken my meds all weekend...

Has anyone else noticed this sort of pattern? Or am I just nuts? ;)

You are desensitizing and then oversensitising your dopamine and norepinephrine levels, hence after that "drug holiday" and taking the drug on Monday, you feel really wired.

I think ADHD meds, especially for people with hyperactivity (that doesn't just affect "focus", but impulsivity and a wide-array of persona-trait charateristics and cognitive functioning) should be taken every day, unless there are circumstances that override you needing to take the medication. I'm not a big fan of drug holidays because, yes, you will get that wired feeling when you start taking them again (along with side-effects that you tapered your dose up to get rid of.)

You're basically putting your body through (amphetamine)-induced withdrawal and then going back on amphetamine.

If anything, I suggest trying the Ritalin on the weekends instead maybe. Ritalin can (in theory) reduce (any possible) neurotoxicity from the amphetamine and could be helpful to keep your dopamine and norepinephrine levels up and not in downregulation (withdrawal.)
