My 11 year old son has been having really extreme mood swings since starting Vyvanse in April. he was on concerta prior and was very emotional but since starting Vyvanse he is, quite frankly, annoying to the point of fighting with his 13 year old brother. He has always been pretty well adjusted and little trouble aside from normal 11 year old behavior so it was shocking when we were told he threatened his bro with a steak knife. Tonight he was sent to his room for disrespecting his mother and said he was going to kill himself. His swing is so bizarre that coupled with the migraines he's been getting he's got an appointment with a neuro doc. I don't want to even think about a tumor so please...anybody experience these kind of aggressive/depressive mood swings?
his swings are seemingly hour to hour not days or weeks so I doubt bi-polar. and I'm also doubting a brain issue given the lack of other symptoms such as seizures/stroke like symptoms.
He's also coming off vyvanse starting tomorrow so its kind of moot but I'd still like some reassurance.

I had a problem with aggression and mood swings when I first started Vyvanse by itself. The anger and mood swings were intolerable and I stopped the meds. The only way that I found Vyvanse to be effective and not cause the aggression was to introduce Lamictal into the mix. Since then I've been awesome, Better then ever. I am on 80mg of Vyvanse, 50 in the AM, and 30 at noon to prevent the mood dip I still get, but not too bad. As for the Lamictal, I am on 25mg which I take 4-5 hours before bed time. 25mg is an extremely low dose, but it does the trick. I hope that your son finds something that works for him. I do sometimes get awful headaches but ive noticed that its because I can't relax my muscles (I think Vyvanse creates a situation where you can't relax) and then the headache will start. Try giving him Ibuprofen right when the pain starts and usually my pain resides after half an hour.

I'm taking vyvanse and prozac 60mg. It's calmed me down. Everyone's different.

It sounds like a med issue combined with possible hormone changes related to impending puberty.

My 11 year-old, who does not have ADHD, has been such a grump lately and my husband and I think it's just the start of some hormone changes.

But if the aggression started with the meds, I'd consider the meds the problem first.

Good luck!
