So begins a journey. I don't know much yet. Monday, June16, I went to an orientation meeting for people needing State Department of Rehabilitation services. This office is located at my area's One-Stop Center.
Here is a link to help you find your area's One-Stop Career Center (http://www.servicelocator.org/).
Why am I seeking services? Several reasons:
I cannot return to teaching because of changes in my health.
My MSED prices me out of secondary teaching jobs in my state. People with a BS/BA are much cheaper to hire.
While teaching I realized I found the most enjoyment and fulfillment when I got to work with students on exploring and planning their education and discovering the type of work that fits them best.
What disabilities or difficulties am I seeking services for?
Hearing loss and voice problems that affect communication
Fibromyalgia and spinal arthritis-limit mobility and ability to carry heavy loads.
Panic disorder-affects work relationships with supervisors
Learning disabilities-never been officially tested but there is a state funded program that I might qualify for.
Everything listed above will need to be documented by medical records and letters from my doctors specifying my limitations and areas needing accommodations.
If interested, stop at your One-Stop Career Center (http://www.careeronestop.org/) and see what services are offered and those you might qualify for. This is the home page link, where you can learn about the services provided. The link I posted in the first part of this post helps you find the Center in your area. Remember--it is only a disability if it keeps you from successfully performing your work duties or adversely affects your ability to do your job. Therefore, ADHD/ADD might or might not be considered a disability depending on your specific situation.
Will post more after July 2. Will see what, if any services I might qualify and how to document and request letters from doctors, including my PhD therapist--he knows some of my needs better than my medical doctors.
Hoping my journey will help others....More posts to come..
