Are phobias common with ADDers? My son has acquired a needle phobia (along with some of the sensitivities mentioned in other posts--and especially sensitive to bright light).

Hi becknall and welcome to forums.

All children and adolescents have a unique background. So, it is possible that a child that is ADD/ADHD may have a phobia.

Here is the fact sheet on phobias as noted by the National Mental Health Association.

http://www.nmha.org/infoctr/factsheets/35.cfm

As a personal note, when I was small, I had my vaccines and had a double dose in the arm. As a result, I fainted and since then I have been afraid to take a shot in the upper arm. However, the last two times I had my flu shot, I must confess that I managed to take it in the arm. I don't like it and it makes me very anxious and I still fear that I will pass out. However, I can give blood with no problem.

drains and plumbing in general

ph eye err (knock on wood)...its that bad i can't even spell it out right :-(

insects (but spiders and snakes and other things like that never phase me)

I get really scared and uncomfortable when I've been on a boat and we were far away from the shore. I've never been on a cruiseship and I never will. The thought of seeing nothing but ocean scares the he** out of me.

I'm scared of wide, open spaces in general. I hate being in them, the countryside, the water, rooms that are too spacey, the beach with no people around, you name it.

Once, as a kid, my class and I were having a field trip to the museum and we were all in the Montreal metro when it just stopped (it was just accelerating out of the station)...
the doors were locked and all the kids were jam packed, so we stayed in for 10 min. I seriously thought i was going to die choked and trampled.

da** people breathing my air!

;-)

I can relate to the cooly's ship statement though.. on the sea i feel very vulnerable, and although im in open space, you feel kind of confined.

Malls also make me feel incomfortable (perhaps more out of disliking the people hanging in it rather than if its an open/closed space), does that qualify ?

Malls are tough for me.....they are so crowded and loud, so I totally understand I would think that would qualify. I would rather go to the mall when it is not that crowded, and forget the Holiday season when everyone is shopping.......

i am 30 yrs old and am terrified of fire and snakes. when i was little my brothers used to chase me around the yard with garter or grass snakes....and i remember one time climbing up on top of the banister on our porch because there was a garter snake curled up on the porch step....i think i was about 10. and as far as fire goes....i have a really hard time watching a fire in the fireplace or a bonfire. wten i was 6 we had a trailer fire. to this day(living in a trailer) i stay up until the man gets home from work (he is ex-fireman) and i just feel some sort of comfort in thinking he will make sure everyone gets out okay. until we got together my kids slept with me...so i knew if anything happened i would be able to get them out. sad huh?
and i am also terrified of death....although i think most ppl are. i dont think that is a phobia though. anyhow thanks for listening i should probably take this to a shrink...LMAO

I am abnormally terrified of ants. They are the only thing that has ever given me a true "panic attack." Just the other day I had set my cats' food down on my bed and then left home and forgot about it. When I came home there was a RIVER of ants across my bed, all over my sheets and pillows. It was the ultimate violation for me. I was incapable of taking any action at all. A family member of mine had to clean it up for me. I just stood there and cried. Anytime I see ants, I "feel" them crawling all over me for hours afterward. It is pretty embarassing, and a little ridiculous, but I just can't seem to get over it.
I also have a strange, but much less intense fear of large structures such as factories, skyscrapers, etc. It isn't the height so much as the volume. Wierd, I know.

I have a problem of public speaking infront of people I know. To complete strangers I am completely fine but I get really nervous in front of classmates. (not my friends though)
Also I have this strange fear of chickens. I don't know I haven't had any bad experiences with them, I just think that they could just jump up and scratch/peck your eyes out. I refuse to go near a live one.

I am very sensitive to touch and light. I think some phobias are common in adders while others may not be. Talk with your sons doctor is you have concerns. How old is he? I know that when I was little I had a fear of needles as well. Now I have 22 tattoos! No more fear of needles.

P.S. I don't recommend your son get 22 tattoos to get over his fear of needles!
