While it's admirable that you want to help, I get the impression that your friend is doing something that you do not agree with and want to change.

Anywho, all you can do is make them aware that you think there is a problem and suggest they seek help for themselves.

it kind of makes sense, when i find something i like, i can pour what seems like YEARS into it and not even blink. something such as sex can be very addicting especially to us. we can put so much into something we like whether or not we understand the consequences. even if we do, we want it and try to get it.

As a diagnosed person with ADD and also sex addiction I can honestly say that there is a definite connection between the two for me. Because I have OCD tendencies I also have an addictive personality and as such am a sex addict and an alcoholic. So I think that it is quite possible that there is a connection. By the way, if you ever feel that you might be a sex addict there are several 12 step organizations available and maybe even addiction counselors in your area who have dealt with sex addiction.:)

So what do you wanna know?

Yes, there is a connection between adhd and sex addiction. There's a connection between adhd and alcohol addiction as well, and drug addiction, all kinds of addictions. The thinking is that adhd'ers are often trying to medicate themselves through various means. And if we don't get a prescribed med, we will turn to some other source and easily turn it into an addiction.

Our brains don't work as they should, and so we are vulnerable to seeking stimulants (no pun intended) to help us focus, to provide some calm.

ADHD is generally bad for intimate relationships, as adhder's have trouble "reading" social situations, reading body language, getting clear on their own thoughts and needs. So there is a lot of isolation and disconnection, and these two things cut a straight path to sex addiction.

There are a number of 12 step groups out there. Is your friend open to this assessment/diagnosis? There are also some therapists who specialize in sex addiction. I would be cautious about going to a "regular" counselor as counselors without experience of sex addiction often do not fully grasp the ferocious power of the compulsion and they don't understand the best ways of treatment. Many counselors think, Oh, just work on yourself and stop, etc ... That's about as helpful to a sex addict as it would be to a drug addict. Not very.

Your friend is lucky to have you. Sex addiction is real. Many sex addicts are themselves former skeptics of the concept of sex addiction. But after they find themselves literally unable to stop their compulsive behavior (from going to strip clubs, to watching pornography on the net to sex with prostitutes and anonymous partners), they come to accept that the concept is very real. I will note that there is a school of thought that classifies sexual compulsion as a variation of obsessive compulsive disorder and not an addiction. I'm not sure what the treatment implications of this distinction are.

Hope this helps.

Addictive behaviors are very common in ADHD people. Addiction and ADHD have both been found to be highly genetic.

Some people can pick up a cigarette, take a smoke and nothing, and for those with the genetic link can puff and instantly feel the craving and need and the vicious cycle starts.

This can be the same for any addictive behavior..food, sex, gambling, porn, alcohol, internet or gaming addictions, anything.

But just to clarify, addictions and ADHD don't necessarily go hand in hand.

Sex addict here, it's such a burden to be always "ready to go" Anyways, if you do know someone who needs help, please push them to get help. It's easy to get addicted to anything with ADHD, and often times the realization doesn't hit until the addiction has reached deep.
