View Full Version : Supplement questions
nurse708 09-08-08, 10:21 PM Ok...I have searched and searched and I still can't make much sense of when and how much of certain supplements to take. I can tell from all of my searching that there are a lot of different opinions regarding this topic and I do welcome any and all advice. I also realize that under no circumstance is anyone telling me what to take...I am simply asking for input on what seems to help others. With all of that being said, here are the supplements that I bought today. Just wondering when it would be best to take them in relation to the Adderall IR 10mg that I take 3 to 4 times per day.
Magnesium 250mg
L-Tyrosine 500mg
Vitamin B-6 100mg
Fish Oil 1000mg
Thanks so much for your input!! :D
i usually take my vitamins & supplements at night before i go to bed.

I am curious about the same things. What I do recall reading is:
Some people find L-tyrosine raises their blood pressure...when taken with or in conjunction with Adderall this can be at the least uncomfortable, and has the possibility of being dangerous.
Avoid magnesium citrate, as the citrate part means it has citric acid (I think?) Citric acid causes you to metabolize Adderall faster, which may make it less effective.
Fish oils are COOL!
B-6 is great for lots of things, have also heard of folks who take B-12.
Many folks take supplements or multivitamins at beditime so they don't interfere with the meds.
I am so glad you posted this, and eager to hear what people have to say!
Tylerlee17 09-09-08, 04:49 PM Ask your doctor before you go mixing herbal supplements with ADHD meds. I had an episode of psychosis when I got drunk one night a few weeks back, after a week and half of taking L-Tyrosine, St. Johns Wort, and Omega 3 Fatty Acids. I'm a Pharmacy Technician but unfortunately there are not many reputable publications on exactally what herbal remedies interact with just general ideas. It's easy to find other perscription interactions with ADHD medications but not Herbal supplements. Anyway I stopped taking all the excess crap just stuck to my 2 20mg Adderall XR BID and a week later got drunk again - no issues this time :/
Captain Sanity 09-09-08, 05:30 PM You want at least three times that much fish oil. I take 6g a day. Adding in some borage oil seems to help, too.
There are about a million supplements and some of them seem to help, but the omega 3s are definitely the best supplement I have found. SAM-e and alcar with ALA seem to be pretty effective, though, too.
weebl8bob 09-13-08, 07:04 PM B vitamins are great for brain function as is the fish oil (flax seed oil for vegetarians/vegans)
Magnesium acts as an NMDA antagonist thusly preventing tolerance (also has some other interesting effects on neurotransmitters)
L-tyrosine increases the bodies capability to convert proteins/amino acids into dopamine.. Dont take before bed.. dont take within 1 hour of eatting protein containing foods (I've found that if you do you'll get some rather interesting effects to say the least lol)
Oh and magnesium should be taken as magnesium oxide or magnesium maelate with added chelators so as to improve absorbtion.. otherwise it's pretty useless.. The citrate form isnt very bioavailable anyway..
nurse708 09-15-08, 10:31 AM The magnesium I bought says this on the bottle: Magnesium (as Magnesium 250mg 63% Oxide and Magnesium Gluconate). Is this one OK?
I have also noticed that I can't take the L-tyrosine with my Adderall. Puts me over the top a little too much. Today I am trying this, I took the L-tyrosine first with my coffee and other supplements and vitamins. I will take my first dose of Adderrall about two hours later. We'll see how it goes! :-)
Omega-3
very good stuff, I take it every day.
B-complete vitamins
B-complete vitaminsare always a good thing! especially when taking stimulants regularly, there good for the body in so many ways, I can't count them all, appetite, nerve function (Adderall is a CNS stimulant) etc,.
Magnesium
great for keeping tolerance low, I take it fairly often myself. I don't recommend taking it with the Adderall at the exact same time though, wait at least 30 mins before/after. it can increase the Adderall absorption rate quite a bit, causing a mild headache/dizzy feeling somethings and make you feel overall a little weird. that bottle sounds like some good stuff, my preference is Magnesium gluconate and taurinate.
L-Tyrosine
be very careful taking L-Tyrosine with Adderall, (even during the same day) I use to, but I don't anymore.. way too much serotonin (overload) which is really not good when taking stimulants. although they work fantastic for the off days! if your eating a healthy diet, it is most likely not needed anyway, cheese and a variety of foods have plenty of it. if your not eating a very healthy diet regular though, taking just a little of it would be much less risky and have less negative effects (serotonin syndrome symptoms) most L-Tyrosine capsules tend to be 500 mgs each, breaking one in half and taking half one time and the of other later is always a option.
//just my 2 cents

What was your episode of psychosis like? I'm just wondering because I think I had one when I took Prozac with Adderall? I was having Adrenalin running through my body with a slight burning sensation on my skin, randomly which made me think I was dying.
