My Dr prescribed adderall today (just diagnosed with ADD today). Anywho, he wants me to take it at night? Anyone know why? The prescription bottle says in the AM. He specifically said to take Celexa in theAM and Adderall at night. Any ideas please?

Sweet dreams LOL :D

I would call the doctor and confirm what he said. Taking adderall at night isn't the best thing you can do.

Maybe your doctor has ADD and spaced out when giving you the instructions?

Seriously, doctors are not infallible, and particularly when it comes to medication, if ANYTHING they say seems even slightly off I would call to double-check. And this seems more than slightly off.

there must be a mistake. people usually can't sleep while on a stimulant... and it's productivity is wasted when you're just laying down.

hmm. :( call him.

NO NO NO NO NO>>>>>>>>>>>
This has been written wrong...as he was obviously thinking of a million things at once...its what we do!
There is NO way this is correct...call office and confirm, the front desk staff can pull your chart and check...but seriously, this happens offten, as patients are scheduled every 8-10 minutes...
Don't think ill will, just know with the demands of patients, insurance, and government, our minds(ADD OR NOT) will have a way of blipping us.

Have you ever done things like throw the candy bar in the trash and kept the wrapper or gotten the names of backwards. Saying things like I am going to get some store from the bread? I would guess that the doctor may have done the same thing and gotten the names of your medications backwards - It would make more sense to take the Celexa at night and the adderall in the morning

The pharmacist typed out the directions on the bottle - he is getting the directions from the prescription the doctor wrote out. The suggestions in the above post about calling his office are good ideas sense you seem to be confused / in doubt.

I agree with mmead- everyone messes up their words sometimes, might as well double check on the celexa atleast

I conquer with all of you, call the doctor, maybe he does have ADD, but when in doubt, check it out.

He might not want you to confuse the celexa and adderal side effects. If it's your first time he's probably more worried about you seeing if it works than getting use out of it so it does make some sense to try it the first time while you are at home, not right before jumping in the car to go to work. But, it's best to call him, obviously.

If the doc said "PM", that could mean anytime after noon. He could have also made an error. The pharmacy might have made an error too. Do you remember exactly what the prescription said?

In any case, give the doctor a call, he can clarify this best. If I take Adderall after 5 or 5:30 PM, I get NO sleep.

OK..I called and he said "before bed". I don't understand! However he did say (through the nurse, of course) that if I wanted to take it in the AM, I could...just to take my Celexa at night(like if I had a problem with wanting to take it at night, then take it whenever but just make sure I take it...LOL). I already have insomnia so why would I want to torture myself more. The nurse explained to me kinda why he said before bed but I totally did not get it. So, for now, I am taking it in the AM and will ask him why it's suppose to be in the evening when I go in on Tuesday.

OMG! DO NOT take the adderall at night! You won't sleep at all..and find a new doctor who knows what he is doing. I would insist on the doctor giving you a very clear reason as why you should take a major stimulant right before bed...this sounds nuts. :(

I too must agree that it doesn't make any sense to take it right before bed... after a healthy night of sleep you would have slept through all of the benefits and it would have mostly or completely worn off by the time you wake up. What would even be the point of taking it in this situation?

Seriously though, if my doctor told me to take a stimulant "before bed" and couldn't give me a reason why then I would be looking for a new doctor, but that's just me.

He gave the nurse a reason but I didn't get it but he told her to tell me to go ahead and take it in the AM if I wanted to. When I go back on Tuesday, I will ask what his reason is. I want to keep taking it in the AM. What does he want me to do...take it before bed so I can concentrate better on sleeping...LOL! I think it might have been cuz I told him that I took my Celexa in the AM. Maybe he didn't want to change that around on me but didn't want me to take 2 meds in the AM at the same time...I don't know though. Honestly, if I keep feeling like I do (less attitude and crankiness problems), I am gonna wean myself off of the Celexa and go with just Adderall (If I decide I agree with his Diagnosis-I am waiting for a book to come in that someone on here recommended I read!).

Actually, this makes me inquisitive..
Am I the only one who gets better sleep If I take my adderall later in the day??
Like if I take my XR in the morning when I get up at 5 it's done working by 12 (or so it seems) so I dose again with my IR and that lasts until 3-4 and then that dose wears off and when I try to sleep at 9-10 I find I really cant focus on sleeping and my mind goes wild.. but if I take my XR at 8 and my IR at 3-4 then I find I can fall asleep perfectly fine..

The reason the later dosing isnt feasible for me is due to the fact that if I dont take the XR first thing when I get up, I seem to be extremely impulsive until I take it and it begins working..

Anyway.. my question is, am I the only one who sleeps better after taking adderall?? lol.. Something seems off here :p

I took a nap today about 5 hours after I took Adderall and actually slept decent! I usually don't.

Your Dr. must have had a "moment"... I take both Adderall and Celexa. I take the Celexa before in the evening or before bed, it makes me a little sleepy and the Adderall as soon as I get up.

You should probably get clarification, but he probably got the two meds switch in his head. From my experience, the Celexa makes me tired... so who knows.

Just out of curiousity... do you work nights and sleep during the day?

Many doctors that treat patients with sleep issues such as Narcolepsy and Hypersomnia actually recommend taking a dose of Provigil prior to bedtime. It doesn't interfere with sleep and has actually shown to help wake up patients in the morning. Maybe the doctor wanted to go that route? While Adderall isn't the same as Provigil maybe the idea was along the same line of thinking?

ADDERALL AND CELEXA DON'T MIX! IT CAN CAUSE SEROTONIN SYNDROME WHICH (ALTHOUGH RARE), CAN BE FATAL. (Basically Serotonin Poisoning)
It's any SSRI taken with a stimulant such as Adderall. Even herbs like St. Johns Wort.

So, maybe he just wants the Adderall to be worn off before the Celexa comes in to avoid it.

From the WIKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome

Serotonin Syndrome is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that may occur following therapeutic drug use, inadvertent interactions between drugs, or the recreational use of certain drugs. It is most commonly referred to as serotonin syndrome, but the terms serotonin toxicity or serotonin toxidrome are more accurate as they reflect the fact that it is a form of poisoning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome#cite_note-0)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome#cite_note-1) Rarely it may also be called serotonin storm, hyperserotonemia, or serotonergic syndrome.
Serotonin syndrome is not a spontaneous drug reaction; it is a consequence of excess serotonergic activity at central nervous system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_nervous_system) (CNS) and peripheral serotonin receptors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5-HT_receptor). This excess serotonin activity produces a specific spectrum of clinical findings which may range from barely perceptible to fatal.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome#cite_note-pmid15784664-2)

I've learned not to take my last IR dose any later than about 5:00 if I want to have any chance of getting to sleep at a normal hour.

However, my psych. actually mentioned that he does have some patients that take a dose before they go to bed. They say it helps them sleep because it stops their racing thoughts and makes them calmer.
