I finally hauled my butt to the doc to resume treatment. It's been three years since I took Concerta.

She had no doubt that I have ADD issues and prescribed Adderall.

I can't take it until Tuesday because she wants me to wait until my blood work to come back to be sure it is safe for me. She's also testing my heart which looks good so far.

Anyway, my insurance doesn't cover name brands. Is there a generic available? If not, does anyone know what it costs without insurance? I don't want to be shocked when I get to the pharmacy next week.

Yes, there are generics for adderall, but not all of them are created equal. You might want to check the Medictation >Adderall forum for info on where to get the higher quality generics, I seem to remember that Target and Cosco have them, but I'm not sure (I take Concerta). Also, when your doctor is prescribing make sure to tell him / her you want to try generic.

If you were prescribed the XR variety be prepared for some sticker shock. I have a 100% deductable and my 30 5mg XRs cost me $135. That was the negotiated price with the insurance co. Sticker they are $170. The pharm also told me there was no geric for the XR.

Ok, the immediate release adderall is now all generic, as I understand it. So you should benefit from that. The Adderall XR is extended release. That's the name brand and so it is the one that would cost you big time.

So go with the immediate release and you'll be fine. The major drug stores should have it at a good price.

I've gotten generic XR for my son before - Barr Labs I believe it was...if generic isn't available then is it possible the pharmacy screwed up and gave us IR instead???

The IR was horrible for all 3 of my children. High low, high low, it was awful. Once we had that documented by our doctor, our insurance agreed to cover the XR....yes, it is very expensive. Total costs for 3 kids on the Adderall XR is about $500 a month.
