View Full Version : Best ADD psychologist in London

After suspecting that i have had ADD for years and then reading a lot of posts here i have decided to go to a specialist to get a diagnosis. My GP has written me a letter and now i just need to find a good place to have a consultation in London.

Also i am on BUPA.

Can anyone recommend a good specialist in London for a consultation?

Also what can i expect from the consultation? i have some old dyslexia reports from when i was around 7, should i ask my patents to send these down, i have written a long essay type thing detailing all of my problems and struggles with ADD in case i forget anything but is there anything else you need to do?

Help much needed, thanks

Hello Flash :-D

If in London the default is probably the South London and Maudsley Adult ADHD clinic - see other threads in the UK section for websites/addresses etc.

It's a bit of a pain getting an appointment, going private is a much quicker option. Again there should be details on here for you to trawl through. Just have a bit of a read around the UK forum.

Hiya Flash

Welcome :)

I can't recommend anyone unfortunately but I have had an assessment done so I can tell you what happened in my NHS assessment - yours might be a lot quicker/different. Just make sure you get someone with lots of experience in diagnosing adult ADHD, I am sure someone will add some names to this thread soon.

Morning session started with a long delve into my background, lots of emphasis on past rather than how it actually affects life now. I took my old school reports with me, so yes, anything you can take will be most helpful.

In the afternoon part I had to have some cognitive function tests. These were designed to test my IQ I guess. Then more tests to check for memory problems, distractability/attention problems. I guess they then check the results against your IQ and then compare them to a 'normal' result for your IQ level. Again this is just how I figured they did it!

The first part will usually give the doc an idea of the type of ADHD and the other tests will back that up - if it is ADHD.

Good idea to take notes with you. I did. Without it I would have just floundered straight away with how it affected me.

Great that you can get this done privately. I am years into this game with the NHS and still not anywhere near where I feel I should be. But that's another story!

Good luck : )

Ooops mybad, I just presumed it would be private with the mention of BUPA. If it's not then yes, the Maudsley is the place to go, but try your hardest not to go the NHS route if you can help it.

Thanks for all the responses, i think i will contact a few places

LANC Center
Dr K Puvanendrum, Essex Nuffield Hospital
Dr Jonathan Dowson, Adult ADHD clininc, Addenbrooks Hospital
Wellington Hospital
Dr Theodore Soutzos, Harrow Healthcare.

If anyone has any experience with any of these doctors/institutions it would be nice to hear some feedback, i am not sure which one i will go with but i would like to pick one i get a good recomendation from so i know i am dealing with someone approachable and understanding who can help me get treated.

I went to go and see Dr Theodore Soutzos on Harley Street. He is by far the best I have seen and really helped me. I have seen a lot of other docs but no one has acknowledgd that I have ADD before.

His PA is on 0207 927 68 73

Another vote here for Soutzos. We had spent years with my husband being misdiagnosed and wrongly medicated by several "specialists" none of whom would listen to what was being said. He thought he was ADD but they would not deviate from severe debilitating depression and bipolar although years of varying medications only gave side effects.

Soutzos listened and with proper diagnosis and treatment the results are absolutely astounding. I cannot tell you the difference he has made to our lives and the gratitude I hold towards him. I do not say these things lightly.

Dr Theodore Soutzos

Hello All

Have read lots of positive info on Dr Soutzos, have also read General Medical Council info re: complaint and GMC interim panel order making reference 'that sexual relationships with patients or former patients are unethical and unacceptable'. Does anybody know anything about this order? makes me unsure about him.

I'm a former patient of Theodore Soutzos and am one of those he took advantage of.
As a psychiatrist he is undoutably gifted but I wouldn't recommend him for anyone female or under 70, having witnessed first hand his sexual advances.

I hope that helps.
