My son, 15, has taken Adderall XR for years and been very successful. He continues to take it but now, this is what happens:

He says that the concentration is awesome during school. Making great grades and everything is fine.

But, afterschool, he has soccer. He has played since he was 4. When he plays now, it is like he is moving in slow motion or is terribly out of shape. He walks more than runs. Reaction time is delayed and most of the time "watches" the game on the field vs. "playing". He was known to be aggressive, full of energy and an awesome player. Now it is the complete opposite.

He trains with the HS team, 5 days a week. Runs on average, 18 miles a week. He is not out of shape. When we mention running in slow motion, he says that he feels like he is going 80 miles an hour, which is clearly not the case.

Help! He is getting very frustrated and watching his starting spot on the team go down tubes. I don't want him to get so frustrated that he just gives up on the meds.

The Dr. is no help. Increases it, decreases it, changes meds and no answer. Clearly need a new Dr.

Can anyone explain what is going on? Too much? Not enough?

Sounds to me like it's too much medication or that concerta may work better. I have some of the same tendencies when I take adderall, I'm a college grad and have experience with all the adhd meds and have a sucessfull career. When I'd take adderall I was better at slowing down and taking my time, but it seemed like my whole body was slower..... if it's effecting his performance I'd give another med a shot or lower his dosage and see how his performance is then. I wouldn't sacrifice it altering my athletic performance as I was a college baseball player -
good luck

I'm on XR and I have the same response. I slow down a lot more when it comes to work and tasks but I am no good to anyone when the afternoon rolls around. I just want go to go home and sleep.

Thank you! Choosing another med is a definately a possibility.

What about Vyanase, Concerta, or Ritlan? How many times a day do you take IR?

sounds like ritalin may be an option or time released concerta as they may be better with alertness and not sedating

I take IR and it lasts about 4 hours. Most days I just take two doses. If I take one after 3pm, I will find it more difficult to sleep.
