Hello I was recently prescribed Adderall XR 20mg 1c po qd

I am an avid weight lifter and also enjoy running a mile or two during the day

I know adderall increases your HR so I was wondering if it would be safe for me to run and lift while on adderall?

My first class is at 9 am so I usually take the capsule around 8 am. I usually run a mile and then do some pulls around noon, followed by weight training at 6-7 pm after classes

Will I be able to continue my workout regimen?

Also I have been on this medication for 2 days and I believe I am noticing a decrease in bodyfat. Does this really boost the metabolism that much? I seem to have shed some fat off my stomach region

I think when I work out while on medication, I sweat the medication out of my system. Like when you workout after a night of partying you sweat out all the toxins.

It seems like for me the medication is less effective after I workout like I use all of the medication's juice.

I haven't heard anything about boasting the metabolism just heard that stimulants suppress the appetite so you are not as hungry.

After 2 days you aren't going to see any difference in your physique. That's a psychological effect you're seeing.

I work out first thing in the morning and don't take my meds until the workout buzz starts to fade. Outside of keeping track of what set I'm on there's not a great demand upon my attention when it comes to gym-time so I don't waste my meds on gym-time.

Working out boosts your metabolism (duh!) Metabolic processes is what breaks down adderall. Work out while on your meds and the effectiveness of your meds will drop off sooner. I don't know to what exetent we're talking...a 5 minute difference or an hour's difference.

For real authoritive answers go talk to your doctor.

It's probably not so much psychological as that adderal is a diuretic and you are losing water weight and likely drinking less carby stuff as well due to decreased appetite (which make you retain water and keep you from looking 'ripped').

I don't reccomend working out while on adderall if you can avoid it. I've had a few brushes with heatstroke just doing mild outside work, and running is just a recipe for dehydration and you will also push a lot harder than normal on top of that.

I've worked out with weights a few times but I stopped doing that, not from heart rate or dehydration, but I found myself go from my usual 12 reps at 225 lbs bench to 17 while taking it due to the extra willpower/focus, and for me it's been years since I was at that kind of level. It's just very easy to overdo it and injure yourself after a couple of workouts like that my forearms just felt crazily tense for several weeks.

It will improve performance, but it's hard on your body and with the cardio it's actually kind of dangerous and remember you just don't feel pain or exhaustion like you normally do so it would literally be very easy to run yourself to death. Some people's posts about being heavily overweight and using it right before jumping on a nordic track make me shudder. When you hear about sudden death in high school kids while working out it's usually while they are on ritalin or adderal.

Ahhh Ok, this post freaked me out ... although there COULD be some validity to that I don't like the idea of suggesting anyone work out less... I was sure to ask my Doc these questions, because at the time nothing could have kept me out of the gym ... His answer was, at the prescribed amount it was perfectly safe to work out (although yes, you will 'work it out of your system ... that part is true) luckily I had years of weightlifting and using all kinds of crazy supplements (NOT condoning that, just stating the facts) so I know my limits very well ... I think what we'd both agree on is, be very mindful not to go doubling the amount / effort you put in just because it feels easier or you have more energy ... stick to your program and you'll be fine ... be sure the hydrate, of course.

And with with a similar work out schedule as you I would take half my daily dose when I woke up ... work out at mid-day ... second half of meds an hour or so after that & then evening work out around the same time you do.

Drink fluids and eat right.... the only time I ever felt 'weird' or sick taking ritalin was when I either didn't eat enough ... or did something stupid like drink too much the night before (and that was 100% due to being dehydrated from drinking!)

Lastly, without having to go look up the scientific way to explain it ... you will lose fat more easily ... yes, in part due to decreased appetite but it has other thermogenic effects as well.

Ok, I could talk about this forever but hopefully that helps a little :)

I would get a heart rate monitor and a blood pressure cuff. This will allow you to see how the amphetimines will effect your body during your workout. If you have been taking the meds for a while you probably have a tolerance and should not be big deal. Many atheletes do this all the time for the "performance enhancing" effects. If you can take the meds after the workout or workout later in the day that would probably be best.

thewrx ... VERY excellent idea. It didn't even occur to me but I NEVER did a high intensity work out w/ out my heart rate monitor .... it was really interesting, it is an amazing tool ... sometimes I would feel as if I may be overdoing it and my heart rate was fine and vice versa ... it really kept me in check!

Great advice!

Ok, so I know this is an old topic or whatever but I've been prescribed adderall generic 30mg (I take them 15mg at a time), and I just had an episode yesterday when I was working out. I've always been an avid gym-goer, and adderall has never negatively affected the way I've worked out before.

But last night I had taken 60mg throughout the day (15 at 12, then 2, then 4, then 6) and went to the gym at about 8. I was already feeling the "crash" side-effects (that buzzing feeling in my head, agitation, depression, etc)...but when I was running (I usually do 3 miles and then lift weights), I felt like I was sweating WAY more than usual. I always sweat a lot (even before taking adderall), but I could tell that this was way more than usual. So I cut my run short, and then went on to lifting weights...but halfway through my routine, I started getting incredibly lightheaded and nauseous...so I called it a night, tried to drink as much water as I could stomach, and headed home.

By the time I got there, I literally felt so physically exhausted that all I could do was lay on the couch for the better part of an hour...again, I kept drinking water all night, but I felt nauseous for the better part of the evening. I thought this would go away over night, but all day I've felt like I've had less energy than I've had in a long time, along with feeling heavily depressed, a little nauseous, and still having that "crash" feeling in my head (though much weaker than when I actually do take the drug...I haven't taken any today).

Do y'all think this has anything to do with the combination of working out and taking adderall all day? I figured it was dehydration, but it's been 24 hours since I was at the gym and I stll feel like I was hit by a train as far as my energy level goes.

Thanks in advance to any help.

This is just my little two cents, but at the levels that stimulants are prescribed to us, the heart rate increase should be a non-issue unless you have some sort of congenital defect. And the reason I think this is because WORKING OUT IS GOOD FOR YOU. It will improve your cardiovascular fitness to exercise. Every resource I've read about ADHD says that exercise is the ultimate form of non-medical therapy for our condition. Marco Pantani rode all over the French Alps tweaked out of his mind on what would probably be equivalent of a whole bottle of what you're taking and he won the Tour de France. That's over a hundred miles a day above 8000 ft of altitude up and down mountains. I AM NOT A DOCTOR. But I think you will be fine.

I run up to 9 miles on adderall 20 MG 2 or 3 times a day. I would not take it right before you exercise but if you are in good shape (heart, etc) you should be ok.

(i have done a lot of research on this personally because of my condition of hypopituitarism, so i take testosterone and adderall among other things and work out frequently so this is what ive come to understand about this...)

lotta pro's and cons it really depends on how you react to adderall. It also depends on what your overall goal/ reason for weight lifting is. your gonna have to compensate for the excess water loss and make sure to keep in check so you dont get heat exhaustion, and at least take a supplement like a multi vitamin, or more specifically at least a magnesium/zinc/calcium pill (magnesium and calcium help the effective pros of adderall and zinc maximizes your bodies testosterone) and possibly nitric oxide or l-arginine to promote bloodflow since thats crucial to good work outs and recovery, and adderall can hinder that.

because of a few of the above listed reasons you'll probably have a hell of a hard time gaining muscle mass if you arent aware and careful. another problem with working out and adderall is the appetite suppressant, but as long as you consciously take in enough protien and carbs youll be fine.... what am i forgetting...oh yea i remember, adderall tends to be catabolic in nature ( your metabolism can be broken down into things that are anabolic, which is associated with "building up" and "strengthening," or catabolic, which is more "breaking down" of things in your body ) thats why adderall is good for weight loss (both fat and muscle) but not so helpful if you want muscle gain

so whatever your goals are keep that in mind i could go on for hours about this lol
