It's been one visit with both of the psychiatrists I've tried (current one, and one a few years ago for something else).

Of course, they could easily decide you don't need medication and refer you to a psychotherapist instead.

You should be going to the doctor to get help, not to get medication. You should trust them to know what the best course of action is. If you don't, then maybe you need to get a different doctor.

Well yeah, Im 100% positive I have inattentive ADD so basically im going to get medicine lol.. When your failing school because you cant focus to do your homework no matter how much you try its to a point where you need to try something.

He seems like a good guy, and judging by his webpage he does prescribe drugs.

Many of us won't try to get medication until things have gotten really bad. Right now, I personally wouldn't trust a doctor who told me I needed to do therapy before medication.

At least you're getting treatment in high school. I was in high school when I first got treatment, and because I didn't have a diagnosis (or even much information about the condition), all I got was bupropion.

My doc just gave me Bupropion after having Concerta, Focalin, Vyvanse, and Adderall do squat. Do you think the Bupropion is just a waste of time? Or did it just not work in your case?

I know we have a Wellbutrin sub-forum... and most people just complain that it isn't working... :(

Keep in mind that different types of physicians tend to prescribe medications more readily for ADHD symptoms than others. Of course exceptions abound, but generally (at least from what I've noted), psychiatrists are more likely to start a program for medications for ADHD than general practioners or pediatricians. Of course I agree with the other posters on this one, the objective is to get the best treatment possible, not to simply acquire a desired medication. Good luck!

Wellbutrin isn't technically an ADHD medication. It is similar to Strattera in some regards, I guess, but is an antidepressant and doesn't have the track record of Strattera (which still isn't that great, according to many). It's given to people in your situation, as a last resort, but I was 17, had never been on medication, and would have been better off just getting a recommendation for a specialist. Or at least Strattera.

I also just realized we are talking about two different things, Wellbutrin and Bupropion. Maybe they are different, like Ritalin and methylphenidate. I got generic, I think.

Bupropion is just the generic name for Wellbutrin. I don't buy into the whole "Different names = different drugs!" like a lot of people here seem to with different brand generic Adderall...

So far I'm on day 3. It's not supposed to really kick in until a few weeks... I don't know what to expect. Doc told me to keep my Adderall for now. I guess if this doesn't work he'll start mixing or something...

There have been a lot of people who report different experiences with methylphenidate, and Dr. Hallowell has also said the same thing. It doesn't seem to be that way with msot other drugs, which does raise some questions. I don't know about Adderall and have heard very little about its generic form.

When I was taking Bupropion, I noticed no improvement in cognitive function, but I was a little less antsy. I also started drinking coffee at that time, so I don't think Bupropion was really what did it. I quit taking it after a month. It just wasn't worth the price.

The effects of adderal depend a lot on tolerance and how you take it, your ph balance, making sure you are not tired, etc. I think that's about 90% of what makes people go crazy thinking it's suddenly stopped working.

It's hard to answer that question. It depends on what you "take to" your meeting.

By that I mean what's happened before this meeting. Have you had any kind of assessment done? Have you seen a psychologist about it? Have you seen a psychiatrist before? Have you tried treatment for it in the past?

If this is your first step into exploring it with a professional, it's probably not going to be fast. They're going to want to perform their own form of assessment, even if it's brief. From other postings I've read, that's not fast.

My first time, the insurance had me see a psychologist to start out. I took with me a copy of the online assessments I'd done. She reviewed those and asked her own additional questions.

Then I went to a psychiatrist. She also reviewed the online assessments, as well as the conclusion from the psychologist. But I did get medication at the first meeting with that psychiatrist.

Years intervened. I moved to another state. The first meeting with the psychiatrist here was the same review, review of what I tried, and a new prescription.

So I believe that taking in the results of my own efforts, and a clear ability to express what I felt was wrong, was helpful and sped things up.

Don't give up on it. You might ask your doctor about increasing the dosage.

I'm normally very sensitive to any substance. I took 1/2 of a 150 mg Bupropion SR generic "Sun Pharmaceutical Industries" tablet. Within 1/2 hour I got a very significant boost in focus and concentration, and this effect was very specific. It didn't seem to detract from my cognitive abilities like focalin would. This was slightly too much for me as I noticed some muscle tension build up. I took half the next day, and the effect was subtle but there. Both times it seemed to taper off some but lasted longer than 8 hours. I would like to see if this focus effect builds up, but I'm planning to try adderall soon so can't test this now.

The initial effect was very significant and much better than my focalin and ritalin experience. This might turn out to be my favorite med. All the more reason why this "science" is just trial and error. The substances with supporting research are just more likely to produce an effect. Give it a fair chance.
