View Full Version : Wellbutrin to help stop smoking?

I'm seeing my new p-doc for the first time next month. I am already taking a combination of Adderall XR and IR for my ADHD and need some adjustment with those prescriptions. (They wear off too soon.)

I am also interested in taking Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking. I've been an on-and-off smoker for over 10 years, and I'm ready to quit again. Last year, I took Chantix (before I started taking Adderall), and it messed with my head. I was severely spacey and felt like my head was stuffed with cotton. I also have IBS, and Chantix made it ten million times worse. I only took the Chantix for one month (opposed to the six months my doctor wanted me to take). I quit smoking for about six months but then started back.

My mom took Wellbutrin to help her quit a few years ago, and she said it made her not want cigarettes at all. That's what Chantix did for me. I completely lost the desire to smoke. When I quit taking it, the cravings came back, but by that point, I hadn't smoked in a few weeks and didn't feel like I needed to.

I do not have problems with depression, so I don't think I'll need Wellbutrin for anything but helping me quit smoking, unless it helps the effectiveness of my Adderall.

Does anyone know if Wellbutrin can have the same effects as Chantix does?

Also, can I tale Wellbutrin for just a few weeks/months and then stop? Will there be side effects if I stop taking it? I know that abruptly stopping taking certain antideprresants can cause major side effects (depression, suicidal tendencies and even psychosis).

I plan on asking my doctor all of these questions, but my appointment isn't for another month. I want to learn as much as I can about my options before I see him so I can ask lots of questions. I know relatively little about this doctor, but my insurance company referred me to him because he specializes in ADD/ADHD.

If anyone has any insight of the effectiveness of Wellbutrin in helping people quit smoking, I'd be very interested in hearing from you.

Wellbutrin actually seems to help with my IBS, but it could have the opposite effect for you.

For most people, the desire for cigarettes simply ceases - it's very effective in that regard from all I hear (though I don't smoke, so that's not firsthand).

It seems to me that adderal and wellbutrin is a good combo and they kind of compliment each other. The wellbutrin gets me up and moving, and the adderall lets me stay on track once I start working.

It's not something you want to take for a couple weeks and then restart it. The dropoff of wellbutrin is nothing like some of the crazier SSRIs, but if you take it a long time and stop it will knock you on your butt for several days at least. The big problem for most people on wellbutrin is making it through the first couple weeks and adjusting to it. It gives most people some anxiety and very crazy dreams for a while, and each time you restart you will have some of the same issues (though much less than the first time).

Wellbutrin didn't work for me. I tried it twice.

Once was prescribed by my "old GP" who was pretty clueless. It did nothing. He said he knew it wouldn't, afterwards.

The first psychiatrist I saw thought it was worth a try. She said we might kill 2 birds with one pill -- the smoking and sometimes it helps for ADD.

The psychiatrist, however, prescribed it correctly. The "old GP" did not. The psychiatrist wasn't happy with the way I'd been given it before, and said "well let's try it the right way".

But it didn't help with my smoking at all. And didn't do anything for ADHD, either.

It did help 2 co-workers stop smoking. For them, it was a miracle.

We're all different. Your mileage may vary.

Wellbutrin really did help me quit smoking. It sort of made the cigarettes kinda suck - I don't know how, but they weren't as good/I didn't enjoy them as much I did before I started the WB. It wasn't an instantaneous thing, but I slowly cut down and eventually was able to stop altogether. I can't say how much of this was placebo, and how much it altered my brain chemistry - but I would totally recommend it. There are minimal side effects, you won't be dragged through the mud like the ssri's if you stop abruptly, and I've always found it to be a good anti-depressant to boot. Thumbs up.

Wellbutrin is what I took to help me stop smoking and it worked for me. I stayed quit for almost a year but gave in to that "one wont hurt me thinking" and that was all it took. I'm thinking of asking for another perscription for it on Friday when I go to help me quit again.

Both my daughter and I were able to quit smoking while taking Wellbutrin. I've stopped and started it several times without any side effects. I do start at a smaller dose for three days when I start taking it. I've found that Wellbutrin makes my Ritalin work better so I will probably keep taking it.

I found that Chantix didn't agree with Adderall XR... made me feel sick.

Wellbutrin helps cut down on my cravings (even when they're exacerbated by the adderall) though I'm still an off-and-on smoker. Don't let me discourage you though, I think quitting would be MUCH easier with WB, I just manage to find excuses still. For me it's more a matter of will power at this point than anything.

Hey, cutting down is a step in the right direction. Good for you.
