View Full Version : Addicted to sugar free energy drinks & caffeine type stims
NickL30 11-12-08, 10:58 AM I am addicted to energy drinks like Monster energy sugar free. Am I the only one who really likes the taste. Also other stims like Jetfuel, ECA Stack, ALRI venom hyperdrive.
Don't want to self diagnose but I think my problems may have to do more with Bipolar and addiction to the hypomanic energy than ADHD.
Why would you associate bipolar with your addiction to stims?

People with BP disorder tend to have an addictive personality or problems with substance abuse. I am the same way, mostly anything I get my hands on I will fall victim to. No matter what it is. Could be drinks, food, websites (such as this one), drugs, sleeping pills, etc.

I don't really drink any energy drinks, but there is caffeine in those things right? Caffeine is a really hard drug to kick - that could be part of the problem. I know I had a really hard time when trying to quit drinking Cokes and Dr. Pepper. If you suspect you may have BP disorder, I'd talk with your doctor about it. I've been on Lamictal for a little over 3 months now and have never felt BETTER!
My symptoms of BP disorder were mostly manic. Below is a lot of what I felt.
- Pressured speech
- Racing thoughts
- Impaired judgement
- Spending sprees, careless with money
- Engaged in abnormal behavior
- Feeling out of control
- Very irritable and aggressive
- Lots of anxiety
- Delusional ideas
- Last but not least, substance abuse

Yup. My doctor told me that some SSRI's can make your BP symptoms worse. He wanted to put me on Welbutrin for my ADHD, but didn'twant to add that on top of my BP meds. I'd definitely talk with your doctor about this. Ask him about Lamictal (lamotrigine).
Ravenna 11-12-08, 08:18 PM Im BP and ADHD and yeah I am a caffiene addict and have been since high school (35 now). Its pretty common. Early mania can be FUN (the fun part doesnt last long) and caffiene stimulation can mimic some of that.
Just watch you dont overdo the caffiene and send yourself into a full blown manic episode though.

I think I am past that point :o. I finally have to go back to see doctor. Been high flying it on all these stims sort of addicted to the mania. Not Bipolar one symptoms and my insomnia is gone that I descibed in an earlier thread, no more of those food cravings in the middle of the night.
Johnny123 11-13-08, 04:45 AM I can't stand sugar free energy drinks, I think my body doesn't like any of them artificial sweeteners as last time i drunk a sugar free redbull i puked up for quite a while.
Overdosing on caffeine is horrid, You feel like you're gonna puke but for me I just couldn't, I managed to puke abit but the feeling worsened.

Some people can still get euphoric effects from caffeine without any kind of bipolar, though. I get a good buzz from caffeine and have for years.
I happen to be sensitive to most every psychoactive drug.. caffeine being one of them...
I guess maybe I need a better understanding of hypomania. Anyone fill me in?
The thing that (irritates?) me is that, setting aside an adders need for stims, caffine, sugar etc, these drinks are just made to be super addictive, much more so that cola, (and all you little cola freaks out there know what i'm talking about.) I stopped drinking my fav energy drink for a long time, and recently started again. They come in these jumbo cans now, and after less than a week on having one a day i just started craving them so badly. I haven't been drinking anything else, inc cola and WATER:o, just these freaking energy drinks. Not that i'm blaming anyone for my weak-*** habits, but i'm starting to realise they don't really help me at all, i'm just drinking them because i know with cold and factual calm, that if i don't have one tommorrow i will CURL UP AND DIE! :):):p:p
stillfightin 02-23-09, 01:06 PM Exactly. People are addicted to the caffeine rather than the energy drink itself.
