View Full Version : Neutralizing acidic foods/drinks with Calcium Carbonate?
I started an Adderall XR log to document the medication's influence on my behavior and productivity, and overall effect.
However, I have had NO caffeine today, where as I usually have between 200-500mg (or much more) per day to aid my concentration. I was afraid that drinking coffee might interact with the second release of Adderall XR, but since I cut the variable of caffeine out on my first dose of a stimulant, I feel that my withdrawl from caffeine is minimizing the effects of Adderall.
So, I am making some coffee right now, however, only two cups worth. I am probably going to mix it half and half with milk, and swallow a Tums (750mg calcium carbonate) in an effort to neutralize the coffee slightly so that the drug can work to its full effect.
Is this both safe and feasible? I do sometimes get a stomach ache from drinking too much pop such as Mountain Dew, and have used Tums to soothe a stomach ache.
Vote, and express your opinions/concerns/facts.
Thanks!

Grey Kameleon 11-12-08, 07:11 PM At first I thought you said 'sodium bicarbonate'. People do that to enhance the effects (probably when doing 'speed') because it raises the pH or something. I don't know if that has any value when using it as medication, or if it's even safe at all.
As far as calcium carbonate, I don't really know what that would do to the coffee. Caffeine, however, can exacerbate the side effects of Adderall. You're obviously used to caffeine, but maybe you should try tea instead?
I'd be curious to know how Adderall affects a person going through caffeine withdrawal. I started the drug on caffeine withdrawal, and it certainly broke my long-term addiction, but I'm not sensitive to caffeine withdrawal at all.
I decided today to swallow two Tums, whole, before drinking two cups of coffee. This was around three hours after taking XR; a little bit of time before the second release. I can't really say it had that much effect on Adderall, however. I won't be able to tell because I'm not extremely familiar with the drug's effects.
It's been almost six hours since I took the Adderall, and I can feel myself coming down slightly, but there haven't been any major bouts of depression or fatigue. This is working nicely.
When I haven't had caffeine for a while, I become so incredibly "scatter brained" that I zone out way more than usual. I act like a zombie and am extremely awkward. However, I also become extremely prone to anxiety attacks and heart palpitations, so I believe that cutting caffeine out of my diet is a great step towards improving my overall health.
I felt the same way today, just a little less because Adderall gave a slight boost, but my mind was still rushing quite a bit. I like this, though, because it didn't make me feel like a zombie.
DarkCode 11-12-08, 11:19 PM I remember in high school we did a comparison between Tums, Rolaids, and so on, and found that the Rolaids actually worked best. Its more than I want to type out at this moment (didn't take any adderall today, and I've been in a bad mood since earlier - though I still aced my calculus exam). Anyways, you should buy Rolaids, just trust me on the matter for now, but it has to deal with the second active ingredient: magnesium hydroxide. It allows it to neutralize more of the acid than calcium carbonate alone would. You also have a lower cost per Mole (chemistry vocab) of acid you neutralize.
It will help with absorption. Also, you should try taking a week off from caffeine (just try it and see how you feel). Plan it around thanksgiving, have some advil or something around, and maybe slowly decrease your caffeine intake over the course of a week before you stop completely. You'll get headaches, and you'll be lethargic, but because of your adderall much of these effects will be neutralized. You won't be as productive, but for some no caffeine can decrease side-effects such as anxiety, headaches, tremors, insomnia, etc.
Think about it, would you rather have your morning coffee or no headaches, etc?

Pre-Adderall, I was one of those people who stayed heavily, heavily caffeinated from morning till night.
I made no conscious decision about taking in caffeine once I started Adderall, but interestingly, from the time I took the very first tablet, my desire for caffeine disappeared completely.
And I had no caffeine withdrawal symptoms whatsoever. In the past, even going even a few hours without caffeine would make me extremely miserable, so I found this to be quite curious.

Kinda makes you wonder if caffeine withdrawal is really just stimulant withdrawal. Or maybe caffeine and amphetamine are so similar so as to be interchangeable to an addict? I dunno.
